How free bets work

A free bet is a stake the bookmaker pays for. Place it like any bet: if it wins you get the profit, if it loses you’ve lost nothing of your own. In South Africa the term covers several different offers, and this page lists all bookmaker promotions in one table.

• Sign-up free bets. R25 to R50 on registration, no deposit. Hollywoodbets and Supabets are the best known.
• First-deposit matches. Bonus money for sport, such as YesPlay’s 100% up to R3,000 or Playabets’ 100% up to R3,000.
• Bet-and-get. Bet a set amount, get a free bet back: Mzansibet’s bet R50 get R50, YesPlay’s Powerball offer, Betway’s Free Bet Club.
• Insurance and refunds. A free bet if a multi loses by one leg, or if your first bet loses, such as Pantherbet’s extra bets on your first six losing singles.
• Multibet boosts. Extra winnings on accumulators; not free bets as such, but listed with them.

What a free bet costs and pays

Worked example: sign-up free bet

An R50 free bet at odds of 2.00, profit only:

1. If it wins: R50 profit.
2. Chance at 2.00: about 48% once the margin is counted.
3. Expected value: about R24.

At higher minimum odds the win is bigger but rarer, and the expected value stays around 45% to 50% of the face value.

Worked example: deposit match

YesPlay matches a R1,000 first deposit with R1,000. The wagering is 7x the deposit plus bonus, so R14,000 in bets at odds of 1.9 or more, within 7 days.

1. Bookmaker margin: typically 5% to 7% on football markets.
2. Expected cost of R14,000 in bets: about R700 to R1,000.
3. Expected value: close to zero, sometimes slightly positive.

Compare that with Wanejobets’ sports bonus, 100% up to R1,000 at 5x the bonus only: R5,000 in bets, an expected cost of around R300, so most of the R1,000 survives. The catch there is a two-day window and 3+ leg multis at 2.00 per leg, which raises the real margin.

How to claim a free bet

1. Choose the offer in the table above and open it from our link.
2. Register with your SA ID and cellphone number.
3. Complete FICA. Most free bets are credited only after ID verification; Pantherbet also asks for proof of address and payment.
4. Deposit if required, with an eligible method.
5. Place the qualifying bet (for bet-and-get offers) at the stated odds and market type.
6. Find the free bet in your bet slip or bonus wallet, and select it before you confirm.
7. Play it within the expiry, at or above the minimum odds.

Terms that trip people up

• Stake not returned. The single biggest misunderstanding.
• Odds floors and ceilings. Pantherbet’s extra bets must be placed at 1.80 to 2.00, not higher.
• Singles vs multis. Some offers want single bets only, others 3+ leg or 5+ leg multis.
• Pre-match only. Live bets, system bets and cash-outs are often excluded.
• Short expiry. Hollywoodbets’ sign-up bet lasts a day; deposit bonuses usually 7 to 15 days.
• Turnover on winnings. Supabets’ sign-up winnings need 3x turnover before withdrawal.
• Max win caps. Most sign-up free bets cap winnings.

Free bets on horse racing and Lucky Numbers

Football dominates free bet terms, but South African bookmakers also run offers for horse racing and Lucky Numbers. BetXchange adds 10% to winning SA tote bets, Betfred refunds 20% of a losing first horse racing bet, and Hollywoodbets refunds your stake on a straight win bet if your horse is objected against. On Lucky Numbers, YesPlay gives an R50 free bet when you bet R50 on SA Powerball. Each has its own odds and market rules, listed on the offer card.

Picking the right market for a free bet

Because you keep only the profit, free bets work best at moderate odds, around 2.00 to 3.00, where the profit is meaningful and the chance of winning is still reasonable. A free bet at 1.20 returns very little; one at 10.00 rarely lands. PSL and EPL match results, double chance and both-teams-to-score markets are popular choices for South African punters.
