Bettabets in short
Bettabets is a South African betting site with a sportsbook, Lucky Numbers and a casino in one account. It takes Rands, works with the vouchers sold at every spaza and supermarket, and has one of the biggest headline welcome bonuses among local bookmakers.
The headline needs reading closely, though. The bonus comes with a very short time limit, and that changes its value more than the size of the match. This review explains the offer in Rands, then looks at markets, live betting, mobile, payments and what we know about the licence.
The welcome bonus: big match, short clock
On paper, Bettabets is generous. It matches your first deposit 150% up to not published, and adds not published free spins. A R1,000 deposit gives you R1,500 in bonus money on top.
The terms, from our data:
- Minimum deposit: not published
- Wagering: not publishedx the bonus
- Minimum odds: not published per qualifying bet
- Time limit: not published days
- Maximum winnings from the bonus: not published
What 8x in 2 days means
The rollover itself is moderate. The clock is the problem. If you take the full R10,000 bonus, you need to place R80,000 in qualifying bets at odds of 1.75 or more within 48 hours. Very few punters bet that much in a year, let alone a weekend.
Smaller amounts are more realistic. A R200 deposit gives a R300 bonus and needs R2,400 in bets within two days. That’s possible if you bet on a busy football weekend, but it pushes you to bet more, and faster, than you normally would. That’s the opposite of how betting should work.
Our advice: deposit only what you were going to bet anyway, and size your deposit so the rollover fits your normal betting. If the target looks out of reach, you can usually decline the bonus. Run your own numbers in the wagering calculator.
For a slower, easier bonus, compare Interbet’s 1x free bet or the offers on our welcome bonus page.
The 100 free spins
The spins are a casino extra, not a betting one. Winnings from spins usually carry their own wagering. If you only bet on sport, treat them as a bonus you may never use.
Lucky Numbers
Bettabets is one of the bookmakers with Lucky Numbers in our data. Lucky Numbers are fixed-odds bets on lottery draws: you pick how many numbers will come up (or which ones), and the odds are fixed when you place the bet. Draws come from South African and international lotteries, many times a day.
It’s quick and simple, which is exactly why it’s easy to overplay. The odds on Lucky Numbers carry a large house edge compared with a fair football market. Keep stakes small. Our Lucky Numbers betting sites list shows who else offers the draws, including Hollywoodbets and LottoStar.
Sports markets
Bettabets covers the competitions South African punters care about most. Our data confirms:
- Football: the PSL (Betway Premiership), Nedbank Cup, Carling Knockout, Bafana Bafana, AFCON, the EPL, the Champions League and La Liga
- Rugby: the Springboks, the URC and the Currie Cup
- Cricket: the Proteas, SA20 and the IPL
- Other sports: tennis, golf, boxing and MMA
Horse racing isn’t in our data for Bettabets. If you bet on the horses, open a second account with a racing bookmaker such as Interbet or TAB (Tabonline).
The football menu has the familiar markets: 1X2, double chance, both teams to score, totals and handicaps. Multibets are where most Bettabets customers play, and the 1.75 minimum odds on the welcome bonus suits a two- or three-leg multi more than singles on favourites.
Odds
We don’t have price comparisons showing Bettabets is consistently sharper or softer than other local bookmakers. Smaller South African books often price big PSL matches keenly to attract customers, then take wider margins on less popular leagues. Before you settle on Bettabets for a league you follow, compare a handful of prices with one other site. The odds converter helps if you’re used to fractional odds.
Live betting and cash-out
Bettabets offers in-play betting on football and other major sports. Our sources don’t confirm a cash-out option, so assume your bets run to the end unless you see a cash-out button on your bet slip. If cash-out matters to you, our live betting list shows the bookmakers where it’s confirmed.
Mobile: no app, mobile site only
Bettabets doesn’t have an app for Android or iOS. You bet through the mobile site, which works in Chrome, Safari or any other phone browser. Add it to your home screen for one-tap access.
For most punters the mobile site is enough: it carries the sportsbook, Lucky Numbers and the cashier. What you lose is push notifications for results and the slightly faster feel of a native app. If you want an app, our betting apps list has the alternatives.
Payments and withdrawals
Bettabets takes the methods most South Africans actually use:
- Vouchers: 1Voucher, Blu Voucher and OTT Voucher
- Instant EFT: Ozow
- Cards: Visa and Mastercard
- Bank transfer: EFT / bank transfer
The minimum deposit is R50. Vouchers make it easy to bet without sharing bank details: buy a voucher at a till, type in the PIN and the money is in your account.
On withdrawals, Bettabets stands out for one unusual option. Our payments research found it lets you cash out winnings as gift vouchers for stores and services such as Takealot, Makro, Uber Eats and Pick n Pay, as well as by bank transfer. Bettabets doesn’t publish a standard payout time in our sources. Complete FICA early so your first withdrawal isn’t held up.
Licence and safety
Bettabets operates as a South African sportsbook in Rands, but our sources don’t name its licensing board. That doesn’t mean it’s unlicensed. It means we couldn’t confirm which provincial board issued the licence.
Before you deposit, scroll to the footer of the Bettabets site. A provincially licensed bookmaker must display its licence number and the board that issued it. Check that number on the board’s website. A local licence gives you a complaint route if a bet or withdrawal goes wrong, which offshore sites can’t offer. Our how we rate page explains why licensing weighs heavily in our scores.
Bettabets against its rivals
Bettabets’ bonus is best understood next to two alternatives:
- Lulabet offers a R250 free bet when you bet R250, with a 1x rollover on winnings over 7 days. Much smaller headline, far easier to clear.
- Bet.co.za matches 100% up to R5,000 at 6x with 30 days to do it. Half the maximum, but the time limit is fifteen times longer.
In both cases, a typical punter ends up with more withdrawable money than from a 150% match they can’t clear in 48 hours. Bettabets has the edge on Lucky Numbers and gift-card payouts, which neither of those offers in the same way.
Who Bettabets suits
Bettabets makes the most sense if you:
- deposit with vouchers bought at a till rather than a bank card
- play Lucky Numbers between football matches
- like the idea of withdrawing to a Takealot or Pick n Pay voucher
- bet a lot on one busy weekend, so a two-day rollover is within reach
It’s a poor fit if you bet on the horses, want an app, or bet small amounts spread across the month.
Keeping your betting in check
A two-day rollover is designed to keep you betting. If you take the bonus, decide before you start how much of your own money you’re prepared to put through, and stop there, even if the bonus is only partly cleared. Licensed bookmakers must offer deposit limits and self-exclusion; find them in your account settings. Our responsible gambling page explains how they work.
How to sign up
- Register with your South African ID, phone number and email.
- Complete FICA by uploading your ID and proof of address.
- Deposit at least R50 and opt in to the 150% match.
- Bet the bonus 8 times at odds of 1.75 or more within 2 days, or decline it if that doesn’t fit your betting.
Verdict
Bettabets has a lot going for local punters: voucher deposits from R50, Lucky Numbers, full PSL and rugby coverage, and gift-card withdrawals you won’t find elsewhere.
The welcome bonus is the catch. A 150% match up to R10,000 sounds like one of the best in South Africa, but an 8x rollover in only two days makes most of it unreachable. Deposit an amount you’d bet anyway, or skip the bonus.
The other gaps:
- no app
- no horse racing in our data
- cash-out not confirmed
- licensing board not stated in our sources
