Best live betting sites
Live betting lets you bet while a match is being played, with odds that move every minute, and cash-out lets you settle a bet early for a smaller win or a reduced loss. Most large South African bookmakers, including Betway, Hollywoodbets, Supabets and 1Win, offer in-play markets; we're still confirming which brands offer cash-out on which markets.

What qualifies for this list
A bookmaker will appear in the ranked list once our markets data records it as offering live (in-play) betting. That field is still being filled, so the list is empty for now. The article below explains what to look for, and our picks are based on the market coverage and promotions already in our data. In practice, almost every major South African bookmaker offers live betting on football; cash-out is less universal, and its availability varies by market.
How live betting works
Before kick-off, a bookmaker prices a match once. In-play, the price updates constantly. A team that goes a goal down at 60 minutes drifts out; a tennis player who breaks serve shortens. You can bet on the next goal, the next point, the final score, or any market still open.
A few things are different from pre-match betting:
- Bet delays. Your live bet is held for a few seconds before acceptance, and it can be rejected if the odds move.
- Suspensions. Markets close briefly after goals, penalties, wickets and VAR checks.
- Higher margins. In-play markets often carry a bigger bookmaker margin than pre-match ones.
Why cash-out matters
Cash-out is offered on singles and, more usefully, on accumulators. If four of your five PSL legs have won and the fifth is level at half-time, cash-out lets you take a guaranteed amount now. Partial cash-out lets you settle part of the stake and leave the rest running.
The cash-out amount is always set by the bookmaker, and it includes their margin. Used occasionally, it reduces risk; used on every bet, it reduces your returns.
A live betting routine that keeps you in control
In-play betting rewards preparation and punishes impulse. A simple routine helps:
- Decide your budget for the match before kick-off, and don’t top it up during the game.
- Pick the markets you’ll consider in advance, for example next goal or total goals, rather than reacting to every price that flashes up.
- Watch the match or a reliable tracker. Betting on a game you can’t follow is guessing, and other punters have faster information than you.
- Don’t chase a losing pre-match bet with live bets on the same game. It doubles your exposure to one result.
- Set your cash-out rule upfront, such as cashing out half of an accumulator if the last leg is level with ten minutes to go.
If you notice you’re betting more in-play than you planned, switch off live betting in your account or set a lower deposit limit. Most licensed bookmakers let you do either.
How to choose a live betting site
- Coverage of what you watch. PSL, EPL, cricket, rugby and tennis all need live markets that stay open.
- A fast app. Slow apps lose live bets. See our betting apps list.
- Cash-out on accumulators, including partial cash-out.
- Live streams or match trackers, so you’re not betting blind.
- Promotions that cover live bets. Many welcome offers and boosts exclude in-play bets.
Our picks for live betting
- Best overall: 1Win, with live markets across football, cricket, tennis, esports and more, and a large welcome bonus. Curaçao licence.
- Widest market coverage: Betway, which covers 27 of the markets we track.
- Best for local sport in-play: Hollywoodbets, covering 25 markets, with a R25 sign-up free bet.
- Best for live accumulators: Supabets, covering 23 markets, with a multibet bonus of up to 125%.
- Best for multi insurance: Sportingbet, whose multi insurance refunds a losing multi up to R500 on its terms.
Terms to watch
- Live bets and bonuses. Check whether in-play bets count towards a welcome offer’s rollover.
- Cashed-out bets. Most boosts and money-back offers don’t apply once you cash out.
- Palpable errors. If a live price was obviously wrong, bookmakers’ terms let them void the bet.
- Acceptance. A bet isn’t placed until the bookmaker accepts it. Check your bet slip after a goal.
Live betting is fast and emotional, which is exactly when it’s easiest to chase losses. Set a limit before the match, not during it. Our bet calculator shows what an accumulator returns, and the PSL betting sites list covers local football in more depth.
Frequently asked questions
What is live betting?
Live betting, or in-play betting, means placing bets after a match has started. The odds change with the score, the clock and events such as red cards, and markets are suspended briefly after big moments.
What is cash-out in betting?
Cash-out lets you settle a bet before the event ends. The bookmaker offers an amount based on the current odds: less than the full win if your bet is going well, or part of your stake back if it isn't. The offer includes the bookmaker's margin.
Is cash-out a good idea?
Cash-out is a tool, not a free win. Each cash-out offer is priced with a margin, so using it often lowers your returns over time. It can make sense to lock in part of a big accumulator, but don't use it out of nerves on every bet.
Which sports are best for live betting?
Football, tennis, cricket and basketball have the most in-play markets because the odds move with every point, wicket or goal. Rugby and the PSL are well covered by South African bookmakers too.
