03Our review

Sportingbet and Super Group

Sportingbet is one of the oldest names in online betting and part of Super Group, the international company that also owns Betway. Its South African site is licensed by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board and runs in Rands, with a loyalty points scheme for regular players.

Sharing an owner with Betway shows in the product: a polished sportsbook, solid racing, and promotions aimed at accumulator punters. But Sportingbet keeps its own welcome offer, odds and promotions, so it’s worth having alongside its sister brand. This review covers sport and racing; the slots and casino terms are in our Sportingbet casino review.

The Signature Welcome Pack

Sportingbet’s welcome has three parts:

  • A 100% deposit match on your first deposit, from not published
  • A back-up bet of up to not published
  • 50 free spins for the casino

The sports terms:

  • Wagering: not publishedx the deposit plus bonus
  • Minimum odds: not published
  • Time limit: not published days

Making sense of the back-up bet

A back-up bet usually works as a refund in the form of a free bet: if your qualifying bet loses, you get a free bet back, up to R1,000. It’s the most valuable piece of the pack for punters who place one sizeable first bet, because it gives you a second chance on that stake. Read the promotion page for how the back-up bet is triggered and its own odds rules.

What the wagering costs

Five times on deposit plus bonus at 1.90 is moderate. A R1,000 deposit and R1,000 match need 5 × R2,000 = R10,000 of bets. The 60-day window is the longest in our data: about R170 a day, which most regular punters will reach without changing how they bet. Odds of 1.90 are a fair price for a favourite in many PSL, EPL and URC matches.

Because the deposit is included in the wagering, your own money is tied to the bonus until it’s cleared. If you might want to withdraw quickly, think about whether to take the bonus at all. Our wagering calculator shows the turnover.

Sportingbet’s ongoing promotions are built around multis:

  • Multi-insurance: if one leg of a qualifying accumulator lets you down, you get your stake back as a free bet up to R500. Slips need five or more legs, each at 1.5 or more.
  • Multi boost: winning accumulators get a boost from 2% to 1,000%, climbing with the number of legs.

The honest view of acca promotions

A five-leg acca at 1.50 a leg is about 7.6 combined. The insurance makes losing by one leg less painful, and the boost makes winners a bit bigger. Neither changes the fact that five legs at 1.50 all come in less than one time in seven, before the margin. Use the promotions on accas you’d place anyway. The 1,000% top boost needs so many legs that it’s a headline, not a plan. Our bet calculator shows the real odds of a multi.

How to claim the Welcome Pack

  1. Register at sportingbet.co.za with your SA ID and mobile number.
  2. Opt in to the Signature Welcome Pack when asked.
  3. Upload your ID and proof of address for FICA.
  4. Deposit at least R50 with Ozow, a card, EFT, FNB eWallet or 1Voucher.
  5. Place your qualifying bet at 1.90 or more. If it loses, look for the back-up bet in your account.
  6. Work through 5x wagering on deposit plus bonus within 60 days, and use the 50 spins in the casino.

Sportingbet or Betway?

Both belong to Super Group, so they share a lot of know-how, but they’re separate bookmakers with separate accounts, welcome offers and prices. Many punters open both: Betway for its huge PSL coverage and brand, Sportingbet for the back-up bet and multi-insurance. Having two accounts from the same group also makes price comparison quick, since the sites feel familiar. Our Betway review covers the sister brand.

Odds and margins

Sportingbet doesn’t publish margins. In general terms, its main football and tennis prices sit in the usual range for licensed South African books. As always, accumulators and props carry more margin. On a bigger bet, comparing Sportingbet’s price with Betway’s is an easy check, since many punters hold both.

Markets

Football

The full local and international menu: the Betway Premiership (PSL), Nedbank Cup, Carling Knockout, Bafana Bafana and AFCON, plus the EPL, Champions League and La Liga. A bet builder is offered on selected matches. Compare local depth in our PSL betting sites list.

Horse racing

Sportingbet covers South African and international racing, with win, place and exotic bets. It isn’t a dedicated racing specialist, but it’s a solid option for weekend meetings and the big days. See our horse racing betting sites list for the deepest racing books.

Rugby, cricket and more

The Springboks, URC and Currie Cup; the Proteas, SA20 and IPL; plus tennis, golf, boxing and MMA.

What’s not confirmed

We found no source linking Lucky Numbers to Sportingbet, and esports isn’t listed in our data. If either matters, check the menu or use a bookmaker from our Lucky Numbers list.

Live betting and cash-out

Sportingbet has a well-stocked in-play section across football, tennis, cricket and rugby. Cash-out is offered on selected markets: it won’t be on every bet, and it can be suspended at key moments. Sources disagree on live streaming, so don’t count on watching matches in the app. Cashing out a bet that’s part of a promotion may affect insurance or boosts, so check the terms.

Apps

Sportingbet has apps for Android and iOS, plus a mobile site. The apps carry the full sportsbook, racing, cash-out and cashier on the same account. Install from the official site or the App Store only. Turn on notifications if you want alerts when a bet settles or a cash-out offer changes, and keep the app updated so live prices load correctly.

Deposits and withdrawals

Sportingbet takes:

The minimum deposit is R50. Withdrawals go to your bank once FICA is complete; a payout time isn’t published in our data, so allow a few working days for EFT. Verify early to avoid delays.

Loyalty points

Regular players earn loyalty points on their bets, which can be swapped for rewards. It’s not a reason to choose Sportingbet on its own, but it adds a little value over a season. Points reward volume, so never bet more just to reach the next level: the extra margin you pay will be worth more than the reward.

Support and safety

Sportingbet offers help through its support centre on the site. As a WCGRB licensee it must offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, plus a formal complaints route, with the Western Cape board as the next step.

Who Sportingbet suits

  • Punters who like a second chance, thanks to the R1,000 back-up bet.
  • Accumulator players, with multi-insurance and multi boosts.
  • Anyone who wants a big-group bookmaker that isn’t Betway, with apps on both stores.

It suits Lucky Numbers and esports punters less well, and anyone who wants their deposit free of wagering.

Sportingbet against the field

Its welcome is one of the most rounded in our data: 5x is lighter than Playabets and Virgin Bet (both 8x on the bonus), the 60 days are the longest window, and the back-up bet adds real value. 10bet goes higher on the match (up to R5,000) but at 6x on deposit plus bonus in 30 days.

Before you deposit

  • Decide whether you want the pack. Because the deposit is part of the wagering, opting in ties up your own money until 5x is done.
  • Plan your first bet. The back-up bet is most useful on a single, considered bet rather than a long acca.
  • Verify on day one, so a winning first week isn’t held up at the withdrawal stage.
  • Set a deposit limit in your account before you place a bet; it’s easier to choose a sensible number before the excitement of a live match.

Verdict

Sportingbet is a dependable, big-group bookmaker with a smart welcome pack: a 100% match, a back-up bet of up to R1,000 and 60 days to clear moderate 5x wagering. Racing, multi-insurance, multi boosts, cash-out on selected markets and apps on both stores make it a strong all-round account.

The gaps are Lucky Numbers and esports, unpublished payout times, and wagering that ties up your deposit. If you already hold Betway, Sportingbet is the natural second account. Compare it with the rest in our best betting sites list.

Promotions make accumulators feel safer than they are. Set a weekly limit, and the NRGP helpline is free on 0800 006 008.
