What makes a good racing bookmaker

• Local coverage. Every South African meeting, from Turffontein and the Vaal to Greyville, Scottsville, Kenilworth and Fairview, with full fields and jockey and trainer details.
• International coverage. UK and Irish racing in particular, plus Australia, France and others.
• Tote and fixed odds. The choice lets you take a fixed price or bet into the pool.
• Exotic bets. Place accumulators, jackpots, pick 6, trifectas and swingers.
• Streams and replays. Watching the race in the app is a big plus.
• Racing-specific promotions such as best odds guaranteed, race insurance and deposit bonuses for racing.

Racing bet types explained

• Win. Your horse must finish first.
• Place. Your horse must finish in the places, usually the first two or three depending on the field size. Lower odds than a win bet.
• Each-way. Two bets in one: a win bet and a place bet. If the horse wins you collect both; if it places you collect the place part.
• Swinger. Pick two horses that both finish in the places, in any order.
• Exacta and trifecta. Pick the first two or first three home in the exact order. Boxing your selections covers every order, at a higher total cost.
• Pick 6 and jackpot. Tote pool bets where you pick the winner (jackpot) or a placed horse (place accumulator) in a series of consecutive races. Pools can be large; the odds of hitting them are long.

Terms to watch on racing offers

• Non-runners. If your horse is withdrawn, fixed-odds bets are usually void or reduced by a deduction (Rule 4). Tote bets are refunded or moved to a substitute.
• Each-way terms. The place fraction and number of places depend on the field size. Check them before you bet.
• Free bets and racing. Some sign-up free bets exclude racing, or tote bets.
• Racing deposit bonuses often need you to bet the bonus on racing only, at minimum odds.
