Hollywoodbets betting review

Why so many South Africans bet with Hollywoodbets

Hollywoodbets started as a horse racing bookmaker in Durban. It is now one of the most recognisable betting brands in the country, with branches in malls and taxi ranks and sponsorships across local football and racing. Online, it’s the bookmaker most South African punters open first.

It holds more provincial licences than anyone else in our top ten:

• Mpumalanga Economic Regulator: 9-2-1-00051
• Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board: 0000107-029
• Gauteng Gambling Board: BRA-024
• Limpopo Gambling Board: Book 007-LGB
• KwaZulu-Natal Gaming and Betting Board: BOM0092

This review is about the sportsbook, racing and Lucky Numbers. The Spina Zonke slots and the 50 free spins are covered in our Hollywoodbets casino review.

Hollywoodbets doesn’t do a big first-deposit match. Instead, every new account gets a R25 free bet on registration, with no deposit needed. The terms:

• Minimum odds: 1.5
• Wagering: 1x
• Where you can use it: sports and Lucky Numbers
• Time limit: 1 day, so use it the day you join
• Maximum winnings: R1,200
• Before you withdraw: complete FICA

R25 won’t change your life. Its value is that you can learn the site, place a real bet and see how settlement works without risking your own money. Used on a Lucky Numbers draw at long odds, it occasionally turns into something worthwhile. Our no-deposit free bet list shows which other bookmakers do the same.

Ongoing betting promotions

Where Hollywoodbets earns its reputation is in the promotions for existing customers:

Hollywoodbets	Irish Objection: stake back if your horse is objected against Promotion · sports	—	—	—	Claim bonus

• Soccer Bonus Bonanza: extra winnings on football accumulators of two or more selections, up to a very large cap. The more legs, the bigger the percentage.
• Money Back Soccer: on 8-leg-plus soccer multis, you can get stake back if one leg lets you down, up to a maximum payout.
• Irish Objection: your straight win bet on a horse is refunded if it’s beaten after an objection. It’s a small but fair racing promotion.
• Horse racing deposit bonus: a percentage match on deposits for racing bets.
• Refer a friend: a voucher for each friend who joins, deposits and bets.

Read the qualifying odds per leg before you build an acca for a boost. A huge cap means nothing if the bet never lands.

Horse racing: the core of Hollywoodbets

If you bet on horses, Hollywoodbets is the default bookmaker in South Africa. It covers:

• every South African meeting: Greyville, Scottsville, Turffontein, Kenilworth, Fairview and the Vaal, from midweek cards to the Durban July and the Met
• international meetings in the UK, Ireland, France, Australia, Hong Kong and beyond

The bet types go well past win and place. Each-way, forecasts, tricasts, swingers and jackpot-style tote bets are all there, and the form guides are easy to read on a phone. Racing punters also get promotions like Irish Objection that bookmakers without a racing heritage don’t bother with.

Compare it with the other racing specialists in our horse racing betting sites list: World Sports Betting, which streams races, and Betfred, which grew from Betting World.

Football, rugby and cricket

Hollywoodbets’ sportsbook covers 25 market groups in our data:

• Football: the Betway Premiership (PSL), Nedbank Cup, Carling Knockout, Bafana Bafana, AFCON, the EPL, Champions League and La Liga
• Rugby: the Springboks, the URC and the Currie Cup
• Cricket: the Proteas, SA20 and IPL
• Other sports: tennis, golf, boxing, MMA and virtual sports

PSL coverage is a strength. It goes beyond 1X2 and both teams to score into handicaps, half-time/full-time, scorer markets and the multi-leg boosts that suit local punters’ love of accas.

On odds, Hollywoodbets is competitive on main local markets. On big European matches, a sharper book can occasionally beat it by a few cents. Punters often ask which one pays more, Betway or Hollywoodbets. The honest answer is that it changes from market to market. Check both before a big bet, or see our Betway review for what Betway does differently.

Lucky Numbers and Betgames

Hollywoodbets is the country’s biggest name in Lucky Numbers. Its draws include:

• UK 49s (Lunchtime and Teatime)
• SA Powerball and Daily Lotto-style draws
• international lotteries from Europe, the US and elsewhere, at fixed odds

Next to it, Betgames runs TV-style games (Lucky 5, Lucky 6, Lucky 7, Wheel of Fortune and Bet on Poker) every few minutes. Remember these are games of pure chance with the house edge built into the odds. They’re entertainment, not an income. Our Lucky Numbers list compares the bookmakers that offer them.

Live betting and cash-out

Hollywoodbets has in-play betting across football, tennis, cricket and rugby, and live coverage of racing. Cash-out is available on many sports bets, so you can settle early when a bet is winning or limit the damage when it isn’t. The cash-out price includes a margin, so use it when your view of the bet has changed, not as a reflex.

App, USSD and data-free betting

Hollywoodbets has apps on Android and iOS, a data-free mobile site, and a USSD service that lets you bet from a basic phone without internet. That reach is why it’s so popular outside the cities. The app is fast, and the racing cards and Lucky Numbers boards are built for small screens.

Payments: the widest cashier in South Africa

Hollywoodbets takes more payment methods than any other bookmaker in our data, including cash:

• Instant EFT and bank transfer: Ozow, SID, Payfast and standard EFT
• Cards: Visa and Mastercard
• Vouchers: 1Voucher, OTT Voucher, Blu Voucher and 1ForYou
• Bank cash-send: FNB eWallet, Standard Bank Instant Money, Absa CashSend and Nedbank Send-iMali
• Cash: at a bank branch or ATM, or at Hollywoodbets branches
• QR payments: Zapper

The minimum deposit is R5. Withdrawals are processed in 1-4 hours once you’re FICA-verified, which is among the fastest in South Africa. Cash-send withdrawals mean you don’t even need a bank account to collect winnings.

Support

Hollywoodbets offers live chat, phone and email support, and its branches are a fallback few online bookmakers can match. As a five-times-licensed operator, it has a clear dispute route through the provincial boards.

Placing your first horse racing bet at Hollywoodbets

If you’ve never bet on the horses, Hollywoodbets is a good place to learn, because the racing menu is laid out by meeting and race time.

1. Open Horse Racing and choose a meeting, for example Greyville or Turffontein, and a race.
2. Read the card: each runner shows its draw (starting gate), jockey, weight and recent form. The form figures read right to left, with the most recent run last.
3. Choose a bet type:
   • Win: your horse must finish first.
   • Place: it must finish in the places (usually the first three, depending on field size).
   • Each-way: two bets in one, a win bet and a place bet at a fraction of the win odds.
   • Forecast or tricast: pick the first two or three home in the right order. Swingers pay if your two horses both finish in the first three.
4. Enter your stake and check the potential return before you confirm.

Tote-style jackpot and Pick 6 bets pool everyone’s stakes and share them among winning tickets, so payouts depend on how many others picked the same horses. Fixed-odds bets lock in your price when you place them. Start with win and place bets on small stakes until the form guide makes sense to you.

Betting at a branch or by USSD

Hollywoodbets is one of the few bookmakers where you can mix online and retail. You can deposit cash at a branch and bet online, or collect winnings at a branch, and the same account works on the app, the data-free site and USSD. USSD betting works on any phone without data, which is how many punters outside the cities place their Lucky Numbers and soccer bets. It’s simple, but it means checking your bet details carefully, because there’s no slip on a screen to review.

Who Hollywoodbets suits best

Hollywoodbets suits punters who bet often in small amounts:

• on the horses, Lucky Numbers and weekend PSL multis
• with cash, vouchers or a cash-send service rather than a card
• who want winnings paid out within hours

It suits you less if you want a big welcome match, deep player-prop markets on European football, or live streams of football matches. For those, a second account elsewhere makes sense.

Verdict

Hollywoodbets is the most complete local bookmaker for racing, Lucky Numbers and everyday PSL betting. It has the widest cashier in the country, payouts in hours, five provincial licences, and an app, data-free site and USSD that work for anyone with a phone.

The weakness is the welcome offer: a R25 free bet is a taster, not a bonus. If a big first-deposit match is what you want, look at SuperSportBet, Easybet or our featured offshore pick 1Win. Many punters keep Hollywoodbets as their racing and numbers account anyway.

Whichever you choose, set a deposit limit and stick to it. The NRGP helpline is free on 0800 006 008.
