What SID Instant EFT is

SID launched in 2007 as one of South Africa’s first instant EFT services, an online alternative to paying by credit card. Instead of a card, you pay straight from your bank account: SID connects to your online banking, makes the transfer for you, and tells the merchant immediately that the money is on its way. That confirmation is what lets a betting site credit your balance at once, rather than waiting a day or two for a normal EFT to clear.

Over the years SID has processed billions of Rand and has been built into payment gateways used by many South African merchants. You’ll see it in cashiers as “SID”, “SiD” or “SID Instant EFT”.

Where you can use SID

In our data seven brands accept SID: Hollywoodbets, Playabets, YesPlay, LottoStar and Bet.co.za, plus the offshore casinos Springbok Casino and Thunderbolt Casino. The bookmakers are licensed by provincial boards; the two casinos are offshore-licensed.

How to deposit with SID

1. Choose SID in the cashier and enter the amount.
2. Pick your bank from the list on SID’s secure page.
3. Log in with your internet banking details on that page.
4. Confirm the payment, usually with an OTP or an approval in your banking app.
5. You’re redirected back to the site with your balance updated.

If the payment stalls, don’t pay again straight away: check your bank statement first, then contact the site’s support with the time and amount.

The login question

SID, like several instant EFT services, works by logging in to your internet banking on your behalf. The South African Reserve Bank has warned consumers that sharing internet banking credentials with a third party may breach their bank’s terms and conditions, and in 2024 issued a directive aimed at screen-scraping payment models. SID itself is a long-established, secure service, but if this worries you, choose a method where you approve inside your bank’s own app: Capitec Pay, or Ozow where your bank supports app approval.

Fees, limits and speed

• Fees: free for the player.
• Limits: the site’s minimum deposit and your bank’s daily EFT limit. Playabets lists a R20 minimum for SID.
• Speed: deposits are instant. Playabets’ SID payouts land in under two hours.

Who it suits

SID suits players at the brands above who bank with one of the big four and want a quick, card-free deposit. It’s also useful at Springbok and Thunderbolt Casinos, where local instant EFT options are otherwise limited.

If you’d rather never type your banking password outside your bank’s own app, use Capitec Pay or Ozow’s app approval instead.
