Who LottoStar suits

LottoStar is a South African original. It built its name on betting on lottery numbers, then added instant games and slots, including its own jackpot ranges that have produced headline wins: press releases report a R28 million win on Elephant Stampede Privé and a R10 million Slotpot winner.

Any honest LottoStar review has to cover the court case.

• The licence: LottoStar holds a bookmaker licence from the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator. Bookmakers in South Africa can take fixed-odds bets on sports and other events.
• The ruling: in a judgment dated 31 August 2021, the Mpumalanga High Court found that LottoStar’s bets on lottery outcomes breached the Lotteries Act and ordered it to stop offering them. The National Gambling Board published a statement on the judgment, and the case was brought by Ithuba, the operator of the National Lottery.
• The appeal: LottoStar said it would appeal. We haven’t been able to confirm the appeal’s outcome.

What does this mean for you? Betting on the South African National Lottery draw itself was the target of the ruling. Lucky Numbers on international lotteries and draws continue to be offered by many licensed SA bookmakers. LottoStar’s slots and instant games sit under its licence in the normal way. The case doesn’t affect whether LottoStar pays out to players, but it does explain why its product range today may look different from older descriptions of the site.

The house edge on Lucky Numbers is built into the odds, the same way it is in any fixed-odds bet. Picking more numbers increases the payout but makes a win much less likely.

Keeping Lucky Numbers in proportion

Lucky Numbers feels like the lottery, but it behaves differently. A lottery ticket is one weekly event; Lucky Numbers draws can run every few minutes, all day. That pace is what makes it easy to spend far more than a lottery player would. A few rules help:

• Set a daily stake, not a per-bet stake. R5 a draw sounds tiny until you’ve placed it forty times.

Two things to keep in mind:

• Jackpots are rare by design. The headline winners are a tiny fraction of players. For most, a jackpot slot plays like any other high-volatility slot.
• Part of each bet funds the jackpot, so the base game typically returns slightly less than a non-jackpot slot. Check the RTP in the game’s info screen.
