What Betfred is, and who it suits

Betfred is one of the biggest names in British betting shops. It came to South Africa in 2021 by buying Betting World from Phumelela, the company that ran the local tote for decades. Betting World became Betfred South Africa. The following year Betfred took a majority share in LottoStar, the country’s best-known Lucky Numbers brand.

That history tells you what the brand is good at:

• horse racing, both the local meetings and the UK and Irish cards
• fixed-odds lottery draws
• a straightforward sportsbook for football, rugby and cricket

It suits punters who want racing and Lucky Numbers in the same account as their PSL bets, and who like a large match bonus with a low rollover. It suits you less if you deposit by card, want live streaming in the app, or need published payout times.

The terms that matter:

• Wagering: 4x the bonus amount, on single bets only. Sports, horse racing and Lucky Numbers count.
• Time limit: 7 days for each bonus.
• Maximum winnings: capped at R10,000.
• Minimum deposit: R20.

A worked example puts the rollover in Rands. A R1,000 first deposit earns a R1,000 bonus at 100%. At 4x the bonus, you need R4,000 of settled single bets within the week to convert it. That’s realistic for a regular punter and much lighter than the 5x-on-deposit-plus-bonus terms at some rivals.

The second deposit is the weak link. At 50%, a second R1,000 deposit earns only R500, with the same 4x rollover. Getting the full R21,000 would mean depositing R7,000, R14,000 and about R9,300 in quick succession. Treat the headline as a ceiling, not a target, and claim only what you’d deposit anyway. Two ongoing offers fit Betfred’s racing-first identity:

• First horse racing bet insurance: if your first racing bet loses, Betfred refunds 20% of the stake. It’s modest, but it’s a genuine refund on the bet most new customers make first.
• MultiBet boost: up to 500% extra on winning accumulators. The boost grows with the number of legs, and every extra leg makes the acca less likely to land, so judge the bet on its own odds first.

Horse racing

Racing is the reason to open a Betfred account. Betting World was a racing business before it was anything else, and Betfred has kept that focus. You can bet on:

• South African meetings: Greyville, Scottsville, Turffontein, Kenilworth and Fairview, including the big days such as the Durban July
• International racing: UK, Irish, French, Australian and Hong Kong meetings

Football, rugby, cricket and the rest

Betfred’s sportsbook covers everything a South African punter expects:

• Football: the Betway Premiership (PSL), Nedbank Cup, Carling Knockout, Bafana Bafana and AFCON, plus the EPL, Champions League and La Liga
• Cricket: the Proteas, SA20 and IPL
• Rugby: the Springboks, the URC and the Currie Cup
• Other sports: tennis, golf, boxing and MMA

PSL fixtures carry the standard markets: 1X2, double chance, both teams to score, totals, handicaps and correct score. Big European matches carry more depth, with player and corner markets. There’s no esports book in our data.

On odds, Betfred prices like the other established SA bookmakers. It’s competitive on main football markets, with wider margins on smaller leagues and long-range specials. Shop around on big bets: a price of 2.10 instead of 2.00 is a 5% better return on every winning bet.

Lucky Numbers

Lucky Numbers are fixed-odds bets on the results of lottery draws such as the UK 49s, SA Powerball and Daily Lotto-style draws. You pick how many numbers you think will come out and the payout is fixed in advance. With LottoStar in the Betfred group, it’s no surprise the product is a core part of the site.

Lucky Numbers count towards the Triple 7 wagering. Remember that they’re pure chance: the odds are set so the house keeps an edge on every draw, and no system changes that. See our Lucky Numbers sites list to compare the bookmakers that offer them.

Live betting and cash-out

Betfred offers in-play betting on football, tennis, cricket and other sports with live odds and score updates. According to Goal’s Betfred app review, the app doesn’t stream live sport. If watching the game inside the betting app matters to you, Betway and World Sports Betting are stronger.

We couldn’t confirm a cash-out feature at Betfred South Africa from published sources. Check the bet slip on your first bets before you count on it.

The Betfred app and mobile site

Betfred has an Android app. Sources disagree on whether there’s an iOS app for South Africa. Whichever phone you use, the mobile site works in any browser and has the full sportsbook, racing and Lucky Numbers. It also lets you deposit and withdraw.

The site is light, which helps on slower connections. We haven’t seen a data-free (zero-rated) version like those at Betway, Easybet and Hollywoodbets.

Payments and withdrawals

Betfred’s cashier is built around how most South Africans actually deposit:

• Instant EFT: Ozow and other instant EFT gateways
• Vouchers: 1Voucher, OTT Voucher and Blu Voucher, bought with cash at a till

The minimum deposit is R20. There’s no card or e-wallet option in our data, which will matter to punters who prefer Visa or Mastercard. Betfred doesn’t publish a withdrawal time. Payouts go to a South African bank account after your FICA documents (ID and proof of address) are approved, so upload them when you register rather than when you want your first payout.

Licence and trust

Betfred South Africa trades through Betting World (Pty) Ltd. Reviews from Goal and Afrik-Foot say it’s licensed by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator, but the licence number isn’t published on the national register we checked. In 2022 the Gauteng board looked into licences Betfred planned to buy from another bookmaker; we found no ruling against Betfred.

A UK parent with a long licensing record and a real retail network count in its favour. We still score Betfred’s trust a notch below the bookmakers that publish two provincial licence numbers, such as SuperSportBet and Easybet. How to join Betfred and claim Triple 7

1. Register with your South African ID number, mobile number and email address. Betfred, like every licensed SA bookmaker, needs your real details to meet FICA rules.
2. Upload a copy of your ID and a proof of address (a bank statement or utility bill under three months old). Your bonus and withdrawals depend on this.
3. Make your first deposit of at least R20 by Ozow, instant EFT or voucher. The 100% match and your first batch of free spins are credited.
4. Play the bonus through 4x on single bets within seven days. Accumulators don’t count, so plan for singles.
5. Repeat for the second and third deposits only if you were going to deposit that much anyway.

How Betfred compares

Against the other racing-focused bookmakers, Betfred offers the biggest welcome package. Hollywoodbets gives a small no-deposit sign-up bet but has far more payment methods and branches. World Sports Betting has a larger single-deposit match and live racing streams, at a heavier 5x rollover. Against Supabets, Betfred’s package is bigger and its rollover lighter. Supabets has the edge in payment methods and gives a free bet before you deposit anything. The right choice depends on whether your first priority is the bonus, the racing or the way you pay.

Verdict

Betfred is a solid racing-and-numbers bookmaker with a welcome package that’s generous for an SA-licensed brand. The 4x rollover on the bonus amount is fair, singles-only wagering keeps it simple, and the first racing bet insurance is a sensible extra.

The weaknesses are practical rather than serious:

• the payment list is short (no cards)
• no payout times are published
• there’s no live streaming in the app
• iOS support isn’t clear

If you bet mainly on racing and Lucky Numbers and deposit with Ozow or vouchers, Betfred deserves a place in your accounts. If you want the biggest bonus available, compare it with our featured 1Win first, bearing in mind that 1Win is offshore.
