What TAB is, and why it’s different

Most bookmakers set their own odds and take your bet against them. TAB doesn’t, for most of what it offers. It runs the tote: pools of money from every punter on a race or set of matches, shared out among the winners after a fixed deduction. The more people bet on the winner, the smaller each share. Your dividend isn’t known until the pool closes.

TAB has been South Africa’s tote operator for decades, through its parent company Phumelela Gaming and Leisure. Afrik-Foot reports that TAB now sits under 4Racing. It holds licences from the Gauteng Gambling Board and the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, and Tabonline at tab.co.za is the online side of that business.

There’s no casino at TAB. You’ll find:

• tote betting on South African and international horse racing
• soccer pools: Soccer 6, Soccer 10 and Soccer 13
• fixed-odds betting on football, including the PSL

The bonus in Rands

A 5x rollover is on the light side for South African bonuses, and 30 days is a generous window. On the full R5,000 bonus you’d need R25,000 in qualifying bets over the month, about R830 a day. That’s a lot for a casual racing fan.

A smaller deposit works better. R500 earns a R500 bonus and needs R2,500 in bets across 30 days: roughly R600 a week, or a few Saturday race cards. Check which bets count towards the rollover. Tote bets, soccer pools and fixed-odds bets may be treated differently, and our data doesn’t break that down. The wagering calculator shows your target for any deposit.

Tote betting on horse racing

Racing is TAB’s core product. Our data covers:

• South African racing: Turffontein, Greyville, Scottsville, Kenilworth and Fairview, including the Durban July and the other feature days
• International racing: the UK, Ireland, France, Australia and Hong Kong

The bet types

Tote bets range from simple to fiendishly hard:

• Win and Place: pick a horse to win, or to finish in the places
• Exacta and Trifecta: the first two or three horses in the exact order
• Quartet: the first four in order
• Swinger: two horses to both finish in the places, in any order
• Place Accumulator (PA): a horse to place in each of several consecutive races
• Pick 6 and Jackpot: the winners of six (or four) consecutive races, with big pools and carryovers

Permutation bets let you cover several horses in each leg, at a higher cost. A Pick 6 with two horses in each of six legs is 64 combinations, so the price multiplies quickly. Work out the cost of a perm before you confirm it.

Tote versus fixed odds

On the tote, a well-backed favourite can pay less than a bookmaker’s fixed price, and an unfancied winner can pay far more. Many racing punters keep a fixed-odds account as well, such as Hollywoodbets, Interbet or Marshalls World of Sport, and take whichever is better on the day. Soccer pools: Soccer 6, Soccer 10 and Soccer 13

TAB’s soccer pools are unique in South African betting. They work like racing’s Pick 6, but with football matches:

• Soccer 13: predict home win, draw or away win for 13 set matches. If nobody gets all 13, the jackpot carries over to the next pool. Consolation dividends are paid for 12, 11 and 10 correct.
• Soccer 10 and Soccer 6: pools built on fewer matches, often boosted by carryovers or added money. Multiples and permutations are allowed. The exact rules differ by pool, so read each one’s rules on TAB before you bet.

Jackpots can be large, and carryovers or guaranteed pools push them higher. Goldcircle, for example, listed a guaranteed R22 million Soccer 13 jackpot for one September 2026 pool. If more than one person gets all 13 right, the jackpot is shared.

Treat soccer pools as a long shot. The chance of predicting 13 results correctly is tiny, and a pool’s payout depends on how many others got them right too. Fixed-odds football

TAB also offers ordinary fixed-odds betting on football. AfricaSoccer’s review lists the PSL (Betway Premiership), the Premier League and the Champions League among the competitions. You get the familiar markets: match result, double chance, goals and handicaps.

The trade-off is breadth. Reviewers note that TAB has fewer sports and markets than a general bookmaker. Rugby, cricket, tennis and the rest aren’t confirmed in our data. If you want a full sportsbook alongside your tote account, open one at a bookmaker from our best betting sites list.

Odds and dividends

On tote bets, TAB doesn’t set odds: the pool does. TAB takes a deduction from each pool before dividends are paid, which is how it earns its margin. Popular runners pay less, longshots more. Approximate dividends are shown before the off, but they change until betting closes.

On fixed-odds football, we don’t have evidence of whether TAB prices sharper or softer than other bookmakers. Compare a few PSL prices with another site, and use the odds converter if you think in fractions.

Live betting and cash-out

The TAB app

TAB has apps for Android and iOS, which put race cards, tote betting, soccer pools and your account in one place. That’s an advantage over several specialist racing bookmakers that only have a mobile site. Our betting apps list compares the local options.

Tabgold

Tabgold is TAB’s loyalty and gold-card brand for regular customers. It’s tied to your TAB account, not a separate bookmaker. Our data doesn’t include the current rewards. Like any loyalty scheme, it’s a small rebate on betting you’d do anyway. Don’t bet more to climb a tier.

Payments and withdrawals

TAB’s withdrawal route is simple: EFT to a registered South African bank account. AfricaSoccer describes payouts as reliable. Our data doesn’t list a standard payout time.

The deposit side is less clear. Our payments research found only the EFT row for TAB, with no deposit methods named in any source. Expect bank-linked options such as instant EFT and cards, and check the cashier before you register if you pay with vouchers.

Our data doesn’t list TAB’s support channels. As a long-established operator, it has customer service through its website and retail network. Find the contact options before you need them.

Licence and safety

TAB holds licences from the Gauteng Gambling Board and the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board. Behind those sits the country’s long-standing tote operator and the Phumelela/4Racing group. Few betting brands in South Africa have a deeper history or a stronger regulatory footprint. If a bet or dividend is settled wrongly, you can complain to a provincial board.

Verdict

TAB is the specialist account every South African racing fan should consider. You get the country’s main tote pools, exotic bets from Swingers to the Pick 6, soccer pools you can’t play anywhere else, apps on both platforms and two provincial licences. The R5,000 match at 5x over 30 days is fair.

It isn’t an all-round bookmaker:

• fewer sports and markets than general books
• in-play betting and cash-out aren’t confirmed
• deposit methods aren’t documented in our data
• tote dividends are only known after the pool closes

Use TAB for racing and soccer pools, and a general bookmaker for everything else. Keep perm bets and pool stakes small: big jackpots come with very long odds.
