The number that decides a bonus
The headline of a bonus is the amount: 100% up to R5,000, 500% over four deposits. What decides whether it is worth claiming is the wagering requirement, the number of times you must bet the bonus before you can withdraw it. Our index looks only at that number and what it costs.
The gap between casino and betting offers is wide. Betting bonuses usually ask you to bet the free bet or bonus a few times at minimum odds. Casino bonuses ask for many times more, and every rand you bet on slots carries the house edge.
Why 30x costs more than the bonus
Wagering multiplies the house edge. At a typical 96% RTP, every R100 you bet costs R4 on average. Clearing a R1,000 bonus at 30x means R30,000 in bets, so the expected cost is about R1,200. You can still come out ahead, because results swing, but on average you are paying more to clear the bonus than the bonus is worth. At 10x, the same bonus costs about R400 to clear and is worth having.
Two details make a big difference:
- What the wagering applies to. Wagering on the bonus plus your deposit doubles the bets compared with wagering on the bonus alone.
- Which games count. Low-RTP games make wagering dearer, and many casinos count table games at 10% or less.
Our wagering calculator works out any offer, and the bonus pages show every offer’s terms.
How we measured it
We took every live offer in our dataset whose wagering requirement is published in the operator’s own terms, and grouped them by the multiple. Expected cost assumes a 96% average RTP (a 4% house edge) and that every bet counts in full; real costs are higher where games count partly. Bets for a R1,000 bonus double where wagering applies to bonus and deposit. Wagering is published for about half of the offers we track; the index will cover more as we check the rest.

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal wagering requirement in South Africa?
In our data the median is 30x for casino bonuses and 5x for betting offers. Anything up to 10x is player-friendly; above 35x the bonus rarely pays its way.
How do you work out what a bonus costs?
Multiply the bonus by the wagering to get the bets you must place, then multiply by the house edge. At a 96% RTP the edge is 4%, so 30x on R1,000 means R30,000 in bets and about R1,200 in expected losses. Wagering on bonus plus deposit doubles the bets.
Are no-wagering bonuses worth it?
Usually, yes: whatever you win is yours to withdraw. They tend to be smaller, but a small bonus with no wagering is often worth more than a big one with 35x.
Why is wagering missing for some offers?
Some operators don't publish full terms until you sign up, or change them often. We only count wagering we have seen in the operator's own terms; the rest are being checked.
