How sign-up bonuses work

A sign-up bonus is the simplest offer in South African gambling: you open an account and get a small credit to try the site. It’s sometimes called a registration bonus or a free bonus on registration, and it’s almost always given by a provincially licensed bookmaker with a sportsbook and a casino lobby.

The usual forms:

• R25 or R50 free bet. A bet token for sport or Lucky Numbers. Hollywoodbets gives R25; Supabets, Gbets and Betshezi give R50.
• Free spins. 50 to 200 spins on one slot instead of, or as well as, the free bet.
• A bundle. BetXchange gives an R25 free bet plus R50 in casino bonus; Gbets gives R50 plus 50 spins.

What an R50 sign-up bonus is worth

The value of a free bet depends on the odds you must play it at, and whether the stake comes back.

Worked example: R50 free bet at 3.00

Supabets’ R50 free bet must be placed at odds of 3 or more.

1. If it wins at 3.00: R150 return, of which you usually keep the R100 profit, not the R50 stake.
2. Chance of winning: about 30% once the bookmaker’s margin is counted.
3. Expected value: about 30% × R100 = R30.
4. Turnover: winnings must be wagered 3x before withdrawal, costing a few Rand more on average.
5. To withdraw: deposit R50 first.

Worked example: R25 at 1.50

Hollywoodbets’ R25 needs only odds of 1.5. A win returns about R12.50 profit, but it lands roughly 60% of the time, so the expected value is around R7.50, with a cap of R1,200. Lower odds mean a smaller, more likely win.

Either way, the bonus is worth tens of Rand, not hundreds. It’s a free trial, which is exactly what it should be judged as.

How to claim a sign-up bonus

1. Go to the operator from the offer card on this page.
2. Register with your SA ID number and cellphone number. Some sites (Hollywoodbets) also ask for your home address at sign-up.
3. Verify. Upload your ID, and a selfie or proof of address if asked. Supabets credits its bonus by 07:00 the morning after verification.
4. Pick your bonus if there’s a choice (Supabets: R50 bet or 100 spins).
5. Place the free bet at or above the minimum odds, or open the named slot for spins.
6. Use it in time. Hollywoodbets’ R25 lasts 24 hours; Supabets’ 15 days.
7. Deposit if required before requesting a withdrawal of winnings.

Terms that trip people up

• Minimum odds. Read them before choosing your market. A free bet placed below the minimum is usually void.
• Single or multi. Supabets allows singles; Betway’s bundle needs a 5-leg multi.
• Stake not returned. Profit only, on almost every free bet.
• Eligible markets. Some free bets exclude Lucky Numbers or virtuals; Hollywoodbets allows both sport and Lucky Numbers.
• Cashout caps. Hollywoodbets caps the sign-up bet’s winnings; most free spins have caps too.
• One bonus per person and household. Duplicate accounts are closed and winnings voided.
• “R50 free” with a catch. If a “sign-up bonus” needs a deposit and a qualifying bet, it isn’t free; it’s a small reward for your first bet.

Why some sign-up bonuses need a deposit to withdraw

Supabets and Betshezi credit an R50 bonus without a deposit but ask for an R50 deposit before you withdraw winnings; Gbets asks for R25. This is partly a fraud control: a deposit from a bank account or card in your name helps confirm who you are, which the operator must do under FICA anyway. It also, of course, turns you into a paying customer. Either way, it’s a fair condition as long as it’s disclosed, and it’s why we list it in the claim steps.

Getting the most from a sign-up bonus

Claim a few. Because each SA-licensed bookmaker offers its own sign-up bonus, you can try several and keep the one whose app, odds and payout speed suit you. Just don’t open more than one account per brand, and use your own details every time.
