Online casinos and betting in Gambia

The legal position of online betting in Gambia is unclear: local operators offer sports betting, but there is no dedicated online gambling framework and we could not confirm a licensing body. Offshore brands led by 1Win accept Gambian players, usually funded with Wave, Afrimoney, QMoney or USDT.

Gambia is a small but enthusiastic betting market with an unsettled legal position. Local operators offer sports betting, both in shops and online, and betting is part of everyday football culture. But there is no dedicated framework for online gambling, and our research could not confirm a licensing body for it.

That leaves both online sports betting and online casinos in an unclear position. They’re not clearly licensed, and not clearly banned. For players, the main consequence is practical: you may have no Gambian authority to turn to if something goes wrong.

This is the position from our research in November 2026. It’s general information, not legal advice. If you need certainty about your own situation, consult a Gambian lawyer.

Local operators or international brands?

Because the framework is unclear, the usual “local licence versus offshore licence” comparison doesn’t quite work. Instead, ask practical questions of any site:

  • Who runs it, and where is it licensed? A clear answer is a good sign.
  • How long has it operated, and what do players say about withdrawals?
  • Does it pay out to Wave, Afrimoney or QMoney, or only by crypto?

The ranked list above shows the international brands that accept Gambian players, according to their restricted-country lists, with 1Win first:

  • 1Win, licensed in Curaçao, with a large casino, live tables, its own crash games and a sportsbook;
  • The 1xBet family: 1xBet, 22Bet, Melbet, Betwinner, Megapari and PariPesa;
  • Crypto brands: BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit.

These brands have a known licensing body abroad, which gives you a complaint route of sorts. It’s distant and slow, as our guide to offshore licences explains, but it’s more than nothing.

A small country inside a bigger neighbour

Gambia is almost entirely surrounded by Senegal, and Senegalese betting is heavily advertised across the border. Senegal’s legal betting runs through LONASE, the state lottery, and it is licensed for Senegal, not Gambia. A brand that serves both countries may have different rules, currencies and payment options for each. Check that you’re on the version of the site meant for Gambia, and that your account is registered with your correct country. Our Senegal guide explains its system.

Wave, Afrimoney and QMoney

Gambia’s mobile money market is lively for its size. Our data lists three wallets plus crypto:

  • Wave, popular for its low fees;
  • Afrimoney, from Africell;
  • QMoney, from QCell;
  • Tether (USDT) at crypto-friendly brands.

The currency is the dalasi (GMD, shown as D). Offshore sites rarely hold balances in dalasi, so your account will usually be in US dollars, euros or crypto. That means a spread on every deposit and withdrawal, and a balance whose value moves with the exchange rate.

Before you deposit:

  1. check which withdrawal methods work for Gambia, the minimum payout and any fees;
  2. confirm Gambia is accepted in the site’s terms;
  3. upload your ID while your balance is small.

If you use USDT, learn the basics first: wrong addresses and wrong networks can’t be undone. Our crypto casino guide is written for South Africa, but the wallet advice is the same everywhere.

What to watch for

Copycat sites. Fake versions of popular brands spread on WhatsApp and Facebook. Type the real address yourself and never install an app from a shared file.

Account details. Register with your real name, country and documents. Offshore sites check ID before paying out, and a mismatch is a common reason for a refused withdrawal. If you change your phone number or wallet, update the account before you request a payout, not after.

Bonuses. On this page, offers show only percentages and spins: amounts in our data are set for South Africa and don’t apply in Gambia. 1Win’s welcome package is a 500% match spread over your first deposits in the version we track, with the cap and conditions in its cashier. Read the wagering requirement before you accept; our wagering guide shows how to work out what a bonus really costs.

Football: the Scorpions and the EPL

Football is Gambia’s favourite sport. The national team, the Scorpions, gave the country a famous run to the quarter-finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, held in early 2022, their first-ever appearance at the tournament. At home, the GFF League First Division has a loyal following, though international bookmakers offer few markets on it.

Most Gambian punters bet on the Premier League, along with the Champions League and La Liga, where markets are deep and information is easy to find. Big tournaments bring in casual punters too, and a Scorpions qualifier can fill betting shops as quickly as a Premier League weekend, even though markets on Gambian games are thin and margins wider.

As everywhere in the region, the long multi-match slip is the favourite bet. Every extra leg multiplies the bookmaker’s margin, so the real chance of a long slip landing is far smaller than the price suggests. Our accumulator guide explains why.

Fast games, slow thinking

Crash games such as Aviator have become very popular at offshore brands. A round lasts seconds, so it’s easy to play dozens in a few minutes and lose track of how much you’ve spent. Before you open one, decide your budget for the session and a time to stop. Our crash game guide explains why no system beats the built-in house edge.

Responsible gambling

We could not confirm a national gambling helpline in Gambia. Use the tools on the site you choose:

  • deposit limits for a day, week or month;
  • time-outs and self-exclusion;
  • logging out on shared phones and keeping your wallet PIN to yourself.

Gamblers Anonymous runs online meetings that anyone can join, and a doctor can refer you to support. Betting is entertainment with a cost, never a way to make money. Our responsible gambling tools guide shows where to find each setting.

Nearby countries

Senegal surrounds Gambia and runs betting through LONASE. Guinea-Bissau to the south has no specific online gambling law, Cape Verde lies offshore to the west, and Sierra Leone is another English-speaking market where the licensing position is unclear.

Frequently asked questions

Is online betting legal in Gambia?

It's unclear. Local operators offer sports betting, but Gambia has no dedicated online gambling framework and the licensing position couldn't be confirmed. This is general information, not legal advice.

Are online casinos legal in Gambia?

Their status is unclear. There is no dedicated online gambling framework, so no casino website holds a Gambian online licence.

Can I use 1Win in Gambia?

Yes. Gambia is not on 1Win's restricted list. 1Win holds a Curaçao licence, so any dispute goes through its own complaints process and its foreign regulator.

Which mobile money works for betting in Gambia?

Wave, Afrimoney and QMoney are the wallets in our data, plus USDT for crypto. Offshore sites don't always support Gambian wallets, so check withdrawals before you deposit.
