03Our review

Who Melbet suits

Melbet is an international betting and casino brand in the 1xBet family. It accepts South African players, runs accounts in Rands and advertises two welcome offers: a 200% sports bonus and a five-step casino package. The headline numbers are bigger than most local brands offer.

It suits you if you:

  • are an experienced player who knows how multi-deposit packages and wagering work;
  • are comfortable with offshore sites and crypto banking;
  • want a very large game lobby and a sportsbook in one account.

It suits you less if you want local protections, Ozow or voucher deposits, or a bonus with clear South African terms. For those, start with our SA-licensed casinos list or with 1Win, our featured casino, which accepts Rands and local methods.

Melbet’s place in the market: offshore and 1xBet-built

Melbet is not licensed locally, as Oddschecker South Africa notes. Its licence is from Curaçao, and it’s listed among 1xBet’s group companies, alongside 22Bet and Betwinner.

Being part of this family has two sides. On the plus side, the platform is mature: it handles huge numbers of players, offers thousands of games and markets, and pays out every day. On the minus side, the platform’s well-known habits come with it: long and detailed bonus terms, strict verification when you win, and support that some players find slow. And because Melbet is offshore, a South African provincial board can’t help you if a dispute arises.

Melbet’s casino offer is a package spread over your first 5 deposits, with a total of up to R32,668 and a minimum deposit of R30 per step. The card shows “terms being rechecked” because the per-deposit percentages, free spins and wagering aren’t confirmed for South Africa.

How multi-deposit packages work

A five-deposit package isn’t one bonus of R24,000. It’s five smaller bonuses, each with its own maximum and its own wagering. Typically the first deposit gets the highest percentage, and later deposits get less. To collect the full total you’d deposit at the top of every band, five times over.

Here’s an illustration, not Melbet’s actual split: if each of five deposits were matched up to R4,800, you’d need to deposit R4,800 five times (R24,000 in all) to receive R24,000 in bonuses. Each bonus then has to be wagered before it can be withdrawn.

What the wagering could mean

Our data doesn’t confirm Melbet’s casino wagering for South Africa. Packages on this platform commonly carry high multiples, in the region of 35x to 50x the bonus in other markets. At 40x:

Bonus Wagering at 40x Expected loss on a 96% RTP slot
R500 R20,000 about R800
R2,000 R80,000 about R3,200
R4,800 R192,000 about R7,700

The expected loss grows faster than the bonus, so the bigger the step, the worse the deal tends to be. Expected losses are averages; your own result will vary. The pattern still holds: very large packages with high wagering are built to keep you playing, not to hand you R24,000.

A sensible approach

  • Read the full terms for each step before the first deposit.
  • Take only the first step, at a deposit you’d make anyway, and see whether the wagering is realistic.
  • Don’t make deposits two to five just because the package exists.
  • If the terms aren’t clear, decline the bonus and play with cash; withdrawals are simpler without a bonus attached.

Our wagering calculator shows the numbers for each step.

Melbet’s sports offer is a 200% bonus on your first deposit, up to R3,400, from a R17 deposit. It lasts 30 days. 200% is a high match rate: a R1,000 deposit would bring R2,000 in bonus funds. Wagering applies, usually on accumulators on this platform, so check the terms. It’s a sports offer, and you generally choose either the sports or the casino welcome when you register, not both.

All Melbet offers in our data are on Up to R32,668 + 290 free spins.

Games and studios

Our data doesn’t list Melbet’s studios or game count. Sites on this platform carry very large lobbies, typically including:

  • Slots from many studios, with names such as Pragmatic Play, BGaming and Evoplay common on 1xBet-family sites;
  • Live casino with roulette, blackjack, baccarat and game shows;
  • Crash games such as Aviator, JetX and Spaceman;
  • TV games and virtuals, plus a dense sportsbook covering the PSL, Premier League, cricket and esports.

When a lobby holds thousands of titles, quality varies. Stick to studios you recognise, check each game’s RTP in its info panel, and use the demo mode where offered. Our slots section has free demos of popular games.

Deposits, withdrawals and verification

Our data confirms only crypto for Melbet:

  • Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies, for deposits and withdrawals.

The minimum deposit is R17 according to our data. Melbet’s cashier may show other methods for South Africa, such as e-wallets or cards, but they aren’t confirmed here. Select Rands at registration and check the cashier before depositing.

Crypto from South Africa

If you use crypto, you’ll buy coins on a South African exchange, send them to Melbet, and reverse the process to cash out. Each step can cost a fee, and coins other than stablecoins move in price while they sit in your account. Keep records of every transaction for SARS.

KYC

Melbet doesn’t use South African FICA. It runs its own identity checks, which can include ID, proof of address, and sometimes a selfie or proof of payment method. Complete them before you play, not after a big win, when delays are most frustrating.

Mobile

Our data doesn’t confirm Melbet’s apps. 1xBet-family sites generally offer a mobile website and an Android app from their own site. If you install an Android app, download it only from Melbet’s official site, and switch off unknown-source installs afterwards.

For locally licensed casinos with proper app-store apps, see our mobile casinos list.

Melbet next to a licensed South African casino

It helps to put the two models side by side, using a R500 first deposit as the example.

At Melbet: you deposit R500 in crypto, after buying it on an exchange and paying a fee. With the sports welcome you’d receive R1,000 in bonus funds; with the casino package, the first step’s bonus. Either bonus comes with wagering you need to check. To withdraw, you complete Melbet’s own KYC, cash out in crypto and sell back to Rands. If something goes wrong, you deal with Melbet’s support and nobody else.

At a licensed SA casino: you deposit R500 with Ozow or a voucher in seconds. The welcome bonus is usually smaller, often 100% up to a few thousand Rand, with wagering set out on the promotions page. You complete FICA once, and withdrawals go by EFT to your bank. If a dispute can’t be settled, the provincial board can step in.

Neither model is free of cost: both casinos have a house edge, and both bonuses have conditions. The difference is in friction and protection. Melbet’s bigger headline comes with more steps, more fees and less recourse.

How to decline or forfeit a bonus

Bonuses are optional. If you’d rather play with cash and withdraw freely:

  • look for a “no bonus” or “decline” option at registration or in the deposit window;
  • if a bonus is credited automatically, ask support to remove it before you place a bet;
  • check that your deposit then sits in your cash balance, not a bonus balance.

Once you’ve started wagering a bonus, forfeiting it usually removes any winnings made with it, so decide before you play.

Support and safety

  • Licence: Curaçao eGaming. Not licensed in South Africa.
  • Group: listed among 1xBet’s group companies.
  • Support: our data doesn’t list Melbet’s support channels.
  • Disputes: no provincial board can help. Keep screenshots and emails in case you need to escalate.

You can ask Melbet for limits or self-exclusion. If gambling is hurting your finances or relationships, call the free South African helpline on 0800 006 008. Our responsible gambling page has more.

Verdict

Melbet offers big numbers: 200% on sports and up to R24,000 for the casino over five deposits. Behind them is a mature offshore platform with a huge lobby. But the casino package terms aren’t confirmed for South Africa, our data confirms only crypto banking, and there’s no local licence or dispute route.

For an experienced crypto user, Melbet is a usable international site; take one package step at a time. Treat the R24,000 as a ceiling that almost nobody reaches, read each step’s terms before you deposit, and set your own limit on how much you’ll put in over the first month, bonus or no bonus. For most South African players, a licensed local casino with Ozow and FICA will be simpler and safer. Compare the options below.
