MTN MoMo betting sites
MTN MoMo is a mobile money wallet that lets you fund a betting account without a bank account: you load cash at an MTN agent and pay the bookmaker from the MoMo app. In our data Betway and Jabula Bets accept it, and MTN advertises zero MoMo fees on betting payments. Withdrawals to MoMo aren't confirmed, so plan to cash out another way.

What MTN MoMo is
MoMo is MTN’s mobile money service in South Africa. It gives you a wallet tied to your cellphone number that you can load with cash, a card or a bank transfer, then use to buy airtime and electricity, pay bills, send money and shop. It doesn’t need a bank account, which is the point: MTN built it for the millions of South Africans who still run their lives in cash.
Betting is one of the things MoMo explicitly supports. MTN’s own site lists betting among the services where MoMo members pay no transaction fees, and it runs a Betway promotions page for MoMo users.
Where you can bet with MoMo
In our data two bookmakers accept MTN MoMo deposits: Betway and Jabula Bets. Both are licensed by South African provincial boards. Betway’s link with MoMo is the strongest; MTN has run “MoMo Weekend Bonanza” style rewards for Betway players paying with MoMo.
In South Africa, offshore casinos don’t take MoMo in our data, and 1Win’s South African cashier doesn’t list it. If you want to play at 1Win without a card, look at Zapper, SnapScan or crypto instead.
MTN MoMo in the rest of Africa
MTN runs MoMo in many other African countries, including Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Rwanda, Zambia, Congo-Brazzaville and Guinea, and there it is often the main way to fund a betting account. In our checks 1Win and 1xBet take MoMo deposits and withdrawals in Uganda, and Melbet takes MoMo deposits in Côte d’Ivoire. Each country’s MoMo is a separate wallet in its local currency, so check that the cashier lists MoMo for your country. Our Africa guides cover each market, and our pages on Airtel Money, Orange Money and M-Pesa cover the other big wallets.
How to deposit with MTN MoMo
- Register for MoMo with your MTN number, in the MoMo app or by USSD, and complete the ID check.
- Load your wallet: hand cash to an MTN store or MoMo agent, or top up by card or bank transfer.
- Open the MoMo app and go to the betting or vouchers section.
- Pay your bookmaker directly, or buy a betting voucher for it, and approve with your MoMo PIN.
- If you bought a voucher, enter its PIN on the bookmaker’s deposit page. The balance updates instantly.
Use the same name and ID on MoMo and your betting account. Mismatched details are the most common reason a deposit gets queried.
Withdrawals
We couldn’t confirm that either bookmaker pays winnings out to MoMo, so treat it as deposit-only for now. Both offer other ways out:
- Betway: bank EFT, plus cash payouts through Standard Bank Instant Money, FNB eWallet, Absa CashSend and Nedbank Send-iMali.
- Jabula Bets: bank EFT.
The cash-send options above don’t need a bank account either, so you can stay fully cash-based if you bet at Betway.
Fees, limits and speed
- Fees: MTN advertises zero MoMo fees on betting payments. Loading the wallet with cash at an agent may carry a fee; check MoMo’s current tariffs.
- Limits: your MoMo wallet limits (which depend on your verification level) and the bookmaker’s minimum deposit.
- Speed: instant.
Who it suits
MoMo suits MTN customers who don’t have a bank account, or who’d rather keep betting money in a separate wallet. If you already use MoMo for airtime and electricity, there’s nothing new to set up.
It’s less useful if you’re on another network or want to bet at a range of sites, because only two bookmakers in our data accept it.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No bank account needed.
- Zero MoMo fees on betting payments, according to MTN.
- Load with cash at MTN stores and agents.
- Accepted by Betway, one of SA’s biggest bookmakers.
Cons
- Only two bookmakers in our data.
- Withdrawals to MoMo not confirmed.
- Wallet limits on lightly verified accounts.
Alternatives for cash players
If MoMo doesn’t work for you, cash vouchers are accepted far more widely: 1Voucher, OTT Voucher and Blu Voucher are sold at supermarkets, and Kazang vouchers at spaza shops. See all options on our payments page.
Keep betting money separate from money you need for essentials. Set a deposit limit in your account, and if gambling is becoming a worry, call the NRGP on 0800 006 008.
