M-Pesa betting sites

M-Pesa is the mobile money wallet most East Africans bet with: you approve a prompt on your phone and the money lands in your betting account in seconds. In our checks 22Bet, 1xBet, 1Win, BetWinner and Melbet take M-Pesa deposits, and 22Bet and 1xBet pay out to it. In Kenya a 5% excise duty is taken from betting deposits and withdrawals.

What M-Pesa is

M-Pesa is the mobile money service that Safaricom launched in Kenya in 2007, and it is now the way most of East Africa pays for things. Your wallet is tied to your phone number: you load it with cash at an agent, receive money from friends or your employer, and pay bills, shops and betting sites from it with a PIN. You don’t need a bank account.

The same brand runs in several countries, each through a local network: Safaricom in Kenya, Vodacom in Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique and Lesotho, and Safaricom Ethiopia since 2023. Each one is a separate wallet in its own currency, so a Kenyan M-Pesa account works at sites that support Kenyan shillings, not at a Tanzanian cashier.

M-Pesa used to run in South Africa too, but Vodacom closed it there in 2016. South African players use MTN MoMo, FNB eWallet or instant EFT instead.

Where you can bet with M-Pesa

Kenya is where M-Pesa betting is biggest, and every serious bookmaker there takes it. Among the international brands we cover, our checks found M-Pesa deposits at 22Bet, 1xBet, 1Win, Betwinner and Melbet. 22Bet and 1xBet also send withdrawals straight back to M-Pesa. The table above shows what we could confirm for each.

Locally licensed Kenyan bookmakers such as SportPesa, Betika and Odibets are built around M-Pesa as well, and they answer to Kenya’s new Gambling Regulatory Authority. Offshore sites like 1Win are licensed abroad, so a dispute goes to a foreign regulator. Our Kenya guide explains the difference.

Cashiers change, and support depends on your country. Before you sign up, open the deposit page and check that M-Pesa is listed for your country and currency.

STK push or paybill

Sites take M-Pesa in one of two ways:

  • STK push. You type the amount and your number in the cashier, and a prompt pops up on your phone asking for your M-Pesa PIN. This is the quickest and the hardest to get wrong, because the amount and recipient are filled in for you.
  • Paybill. The site gives you a paybill number, and you pay it from the M-Pesa menu (Lipa na M-Pesa, then Pay Bill) with your betting account ID or phone number as the account number.

Paybill numbers get copied around the internet, and old or fake ones circulate. Take the number only from the site’s own cashier, and check that the confirmation SMS names the betting company before you treat the deposit as done.

Fees and tax in Kenya

Two costs can come off an M-Pesa betting deposit in Kenya:

  • Excise duty. Kenya taxes betting deposits and withdrawals. 22Bet’s own guide shows a 5% duty: a KES 100 deposit credits KES 95. Earlier Finance Acts set different rates, so check the current one.
  • Safaricom’s tariff. Paybill payments carry Safaricom’s standard charges, depending on the amount.

Winnings are taxed too, through a withholding tax the bookmaker deducts. Factor all of it in when you compare bonuses: on a small deposit, the tax can cost more than you expect.

Withdrawing to M-Pesa

Withdrawals usually go back to the Safaricom number you deposited from. A few habits make them smoother:

  1. Verify your identity soon after you sign up, so your first withdrawal isn’t held.
  2. Register with the phone number that holds your M-Pesa wallet, in your own name.
  3. Check the minimum withdrawal and any daily limit in the cashier.
  4. If a bonus is active, clear its wagering first; most sites block withdrawals until you do.

Staying safe

M-Pesa’s convenience makes it easy to deposit again and again. Set a deposit limit in your betting account before your first bet, and use the time-outs and self-exclusion every licensed site offers. Never fund a betting account through a third person or an ‘agent’ who asks you to send money to their own number: once it leaves your wallet you have no record with the bookmaker and no way back. Our responsible gambling tools guide shows how to set each limit.

Other ways to pay

If M-Pesa isn’t available for your country at a site, Airtel Money is the usual alternative in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia. Crypto such as Tether (USDT) works at almost every offshore site, but you pay exchange spreads both ways. For the rest of Africa, see our pages on MTN MoMo, Orange Money and Wave.

Frequently asked questions

Which betting sites accept M-Pesa?

In our checks 22Bet, 1xBet, 1Win, BetWinner and Melbet accept M-Pesa deposits from Kenyan players, and 22Bet and 1xBet also pay withdrawals to M-Pesa. Local Kenyan bookmakers licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority take it too.

How do I deposit with M-Pesa?

Choose M-Pesa in the cashier, enter the amount and your Safaricom number, then approve the prompt on your phone with your PIN. Some sites also give a paybill number: use Lipa na M-Pesa, Pay Bill, the paybill and your account ID.

Is there a tax on M-Pesa betting deposits in Kenya?

Yes. Kenya charges excise duty on betting deposits and withdrawals; 22Bet's guide shows 5%, so a KES 100 deposit credits KES 95. Winnings are also subject to withholding tax. Rates change with each Finance Act, so check the current figure.

Can I withdraw winnings to M-Pesa?

At most sites, yes, usually to the same Safaricom number you deposited from. Verify your account first, because the first withdrawal is often held until your ID is checked.

How do I avoid M-Pesa betting scams?

Only pay through the site's own cashier or its official paybill, and check that the confirmation SMS names the betting company. Never send money to a personal number or an 'agent' who offers to fund your account.
