What Wave is

Wave is a mobile money service launched in Senegal in 2018 by a company that set out to make sending money almost free. It works through a smartphone app and a network of agents: you load your wallet with cash at an agent, then pay and send money from the app, which shows a QR code and your balance. Its low fees won over Senegal within a few years and pushed the incumbent Orange Money to cut its own prices.

Wave’s main markets are Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, where it is now one of the biggest wallets. It also runs in Mali, Burkina Faso and The Gambia. The wallet holds West African CFA francs (XOF) in the franc-zone countries.

Where you can bet with Wave

Among the international brands we cover, 1Win takes Wave for deposits and withdrawals in Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, and 1xBet takes Wave deposits in Côte d’Ivoire. The table above shows what we could confirm.

Wave usually sits next to Orange Money in Senegalese cashiers, and next to Orange Money, MTN MoMo and Moov Money in Côte d’Ivoire. If you already use Wave day to day, it is usually the cheapest way to fund a betting account. Our Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire guides explain the local rules.

How a deposit works

  1. Choose Wave in the betting site’s cashier and enter the amount in francs.
  2. Enter the phone number linked to your Wave account.
  3. Open the Wave app and approve the payment request, or scan the QR code the cashier shows.
  4. The balance usually updates within a few minutes; keep the receipt in the app if it doesn’t.

Reviews we read describe Wave deposits as among the fastest of the West African wallets.

Fees and limits

Wave’s pitch is low fees, and betting sites rarely add any of their own. Check Wave’s current tariff in the app, because it can differ for payments, transfers and cash-outs. Sites set a minimum deposit, often around 500 to 1,000 FCFA, and a maximum per transaction, so check those in the cashier before a large deposit.

Withdrawing to Wave

Most sites pay withdrawals back by the method you deposited with, so deposit with Wave if that is where you want your winnings. Before your first withdrawal:

  1. Verify your identity in your betting account.
  2. Make sure the Wave account is in your own name and matches your betting account.
  3. Clear any bonus wagering, which blocks withdrawals until it is done.
  4. Check the minimum withdrawal and the processing time shown.

Staying safe

Pay only through the site’s cashier or the Wave payment request it sends you. Never send Wave transfers to a person who promises to top up your betting account for you: the bookmaker won’t see that money. Set a deposit limit before you start, and use time-outs and self-exclusion if you need a break. Our responsible gambling tools guide explains each limit.

Other ways to pay

If Wave isn’t offered for your country, Orange Money is the usual alternative, with MTN MoMo and Moov Money common in Côte d’Ivoire. Crypto such as Tether (USDT) works at nearly every offshore site, at the cost of exchange spreads.
