Where the law stands

Sierra Leone is one of the harder countries to pin down. On the ground, betting shops and local online bookmakers operate widely: you’ll see them on high streets in Freetown and advertised on every football broadcast. On paper, the framework for online gambling is limited, and our research could not confirm which body licenses it.

So the honest answer to “is online betting legal in Sierra Leone?” is: it’s unclear. That applies to both online sports betting and online casinos. Betting is clearly tolerated and widespread, but we can’t point you to a regulator that licenses online play or handles complaints about it.

This is the position from our research in November 2026. It’s general information, not legal advice, and it’s exactly the kind of area where rules can change quickly. If you need certainty, ask a Sierra Leonean lawyer.

What “unclear” means for you as a player

When there’s no confirmed regulator, the practical effect is the same whether a site is local or offshore: there may be no one at home to complain to. That changes how you should choose a site:

  • Ask local operators which licence they hold and who issued it. A clear answer is a good sign; a vague one is a warning.
  • Look at track record. How long has the brand operated, and what do players say about withdrawals?
  • Keep balances small and withdraw winnings rather than letting them build up.
  • Keep records of every deposit, withdrawal and bonus you accept, in case you ever need to make a complaint.

International sites that accept Sierra Leone

The ranked list above shows the international brands that accept Sierra Leonean players, according to their restricted-country lists, with 1Win first:

  • 1Win, licensed in Curaçao, with a big casino, live dealers, its own crash games and a sportsbook;
  • The 1xBet family: 1xBet, 22Bet, Melbet, Betwinner, Megapari and PariPesa;
  • Crypto brands: BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit.

These operators at least have a known licensing body, even if it’s abroad. That gives you a complaint route of sorts, though a slow and distant one. Our guide to offshore licences explains what those regulators can and can’t do.

Orange Money, Afrimoney and the leone

Our data lists two mobile wallets plus crypto for Sierra Leone:

Local bookmakers use mobile money as a matter of course. Offshore cashiers are less predictable: some support Sierra Leonean wallets, many don’t, and some pay out only by crypto.

The currency is the leone (SLE, shown as Le), which was redenominated in 2022 when three zeros were removed. You may still hear prices in “old” leones, which is worth keeping in mind when you compare amounts. Offshore balances are usually held in US dollars, euros or crypto, so you pay a conversion spread on deposits and withdrawals, and the leone’s movements can change what your balance is worth.

Before you deposit anywhere:

  1. check the withdrawal methods, minimum payout and fees for Sierra Leone;
  2. confirm Sierra Leone is accepted in the site’s terms, not just its sign-up form;
  3. upload your ID early, so a payout isn’t held up.

If you use USDT, double-check the address and network every time: crypto transfers can’t be reversed. Our crypto casino guide explains the basics; it’s written for South Africa, but the wallet advice applies everywhere.

What to watch for offshore

Clones. Copies of popular brands spread through WhatsApp and Facebook. Type the address yourself, and never install an app from a file someone sends you.

Agents. Middlemen who offer to fund your account for cash are a common scam. Pay the site directly.

Bonuses. Offers on this page appear only as percentages and spins: amounts in our data are set for South Africa and don’t apply in Sierra Leone. 1Win’s welcome package is a 500% match spread over your first deposits in the version we track, with the cap and conditions set in its cashier. Check the wagering, expiry and maximum bet before accepting any bonus; our bonus terms guide explains each clause.

Football and the Leone Stars

Football is Sierra Leone’s sport. The national team, the Leone Stars, has a passionate following, and the domestic Sierra Leone Premier League fills grounds in Freetown and beyond. International bookmakers offer few markets on local matches, though local bookmakers may price them more fully.

Most slips are built on the Premier League, by far the most followed foreign competition, along with the Champions League and La Liga. Those leagues have the deepest markets and the lowest margins.

The multi-match slip is the national favourite. It’s also the bet that costs most over time, because each added match multiplies the bookmaker’s margin. Our accumulator guide shows how quickly a long slip’s real chances drop.

Young people and betting

Betting shops and phone apps are everywhere, and many of the punters are young. If you’re a parent or share a phone, log out of betting accounts, don’t save PINs, and talk openly about the fact that betting is a cost, not a job. Nobody beats the bookmaker in the long run; the margin is built into every price, as our guide to how betting odds work explains.

Crash games such as Aviator are especially popular with younger players because rounds take seconds. That speed is exactly why they need a firm budget.

Responsible gambling

We could not confirm a national gambling helpline in Sierra Leone. Use the tools on the site you choose:

  • deposit limits daily, weekly or monthly;
  • time-outs and self-exclusion if you need a break;
  • logging out after every session on shared phones.

Gamblers Anonymous runs online meetings that anyone can join, and a doctor can refer you to support. Never bet with money for school fees, rent or food. Our responsible gambling page lists the warning signs.

Neighbouring countries

Liberia licenses sports betting through its National Lottery Authority, and Guinea runs betting through its state lottery. Further up the coast, Gambia is another English-speaking market where the licensing position is unclear.
