Local operators: SportPesa Tanzania, M-Bet, Meridianbet, Gal Sport Betting.

Yes, for adults through a licensed operator. Tanzania regulates gambling under the Gaming Act, and its regulator, the Gaming Board of Tanzania, licenses sports betting, land-based casinos and online gaming, including online casino games. The minimum age is 18.

That puts Tanzania in a small group of African countries where an online casino can be fully licensed at home. The flip side is that sites without a Tanzanian licence are outside the system: the Gaming Board can’t help you with them. This page explains the landscape and is not legal advice.

Licensed local operators

Tanzania’s betting market is large and competitive. The local names in our data are:

  • SportPesa Tanzania
  • M-Bet
  • Meridianbet
  • Gal Sport Betting

They work in Tanzanian shillings (TZS), price the Tanzanian Premier League in depth, and take every major mobile wallet. Because the Gaming Board licenses them, it is also the body you would turn to if a dispute could not be solved with the operator.

International brands that accept Tanzanians

The list above ranks the international brands that take Tanzanian players, with 1Win first. Behind it come the 1xBet family (1xBet, 22Bet, Melbet, Betwinner, Megapari and PariPesa), Mostbet, the crypto casinos BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit.

A note on Parimatch: Parimatch Africa was based in Tanzania, but we could not confirm that it still holds a licence or takes Tanzanian players in 2026, so it is not on our list.

The rest are licensed offshore, mostly in Curaçao (BC.Game in Anjouan). Before choosing one over a local bookmaker, think about:

  • Disputes. Problems go to the foreign licensing body, not the Gaming Board.
  • Currency. Some offshore sites hold your balance in US dollars or euros. Every deposit and withdrawal is then converted, usually at a margin.
  • Bonus rules. Offshore welcome deals are larger on paper. 1Win advertises a 500% package across several deposits, but we have not confirmed its terms for Tanzania. The wagering requirement decides what a bonus is really worth; our wagering explainer shows how to calculate it.

What the offshore brands offer in return is scale: slot lobbies in the thousands, live casino tables, crash games like Aviator and betting markets on almost any league.

Deposits: four mobile wallets and more

Tanzania has one of the most crowded mobile money markets in Africa. Betting sites usually accept all of these:

  • M-Pesa (Vodacom), the biggest wallet.
  • Airtel Money.
  • Mixx by Yas, the new name for the wallet formerly called Tigo Pesa.
  • HaloPesa (Halotel).

Local bookmakers show a business number or send a payment prompt to your phone, and pay winnings back to the same wallet. Offshore sites also take Visa cards and crypto, mostly Tether (USDT). Cards may be declined by your bank for gambling, and crypto comes with exchange fees and price movement between deposit and withdrawal.

Before your first withdrawal:

  1. Complete verification. Upload your ID early. It is the most common reason a first payout is delayed.
  2. Withdraw to the method you used to deposit. Most sites insist on this to prevent fraud.
  3. Note the limits. Mobile wallets have daily transaction caps, so a large win may come out in several parts.

Betting scams to watch for

Big betting markets attract scammers, and Tanzania’s is no exception. The common ones are easy to spot once you know them:

  • “Fixed match” sellers. Anyone selling a guaranteed result is lying. If they really knew, they would not need your money.
  • Tipster groups that ask for deposits. Paid WhatsApp or Telegram groups that want you to send mobile money to an individual, rather than to a bookmaker, are a red flag.
  • Clone sites and fake apps. Copycat sites use names close to real bookmakers. Type the address yourself, and only install an app linked from the operator’s official site.
  • Payment prompts you didn’t start. A licensed bookmaker never asks for your mobile money PIN by SMS or phone call. Reject any prompt you didn’t trigger yourself.

A useful habit: before you send money, check that the merchant name shown on your phone matches the bookmaker you meant to pay.

Working out what a bonus really costs

Because offshore bonuses are often quoted as big percentages, it helps to run the numbers in shillings. Take a simple example, not tied to any brand: you deposit TSh 10,000 and receive a 100% match, so another TSh 10,000 in bonus money. If the terms require 30x wagering on the bonus, you must place TSh 300,000 in bets before the bonus turns into cash you can withdraw. With a typical slot returning around 96% over time, that much betting costs roughly TSh 12,000 on average, more than the bonus itself. That’s why wagering matters more than the headline percentage.

Football, basketball and the big European leagues

Tanzanian football has a passionate following, and the Tanzanian Premier League is well covered by local bookmakers, especially the Dar es Salaam derby clubs. Still, the English Premier League, Champions League and La Liga are where most bets go.

Basketball is the second sport in our data. Offshore sites add live in-play betting, cash-out and markets on smaller leagues. If you’re new to this, our guide to cash out explains why the early-settlement offer is usually priced in the bookmaker’s favour.

Responsible gambling in Tanzania

We could not confirm a national gambling helpline in Tanzania. Licensed operators provide responsible-gambling tools, and the big offshore sites do too. A few rules worth keeping:

  • Decide your budget before you open the app, and set it as a deposit limit.
  • Don’t chase losses with bigger stakes. The margin doesn’t care how much you’ve lost.
  • Use self-exclusion if betting is affecting money, work or family. Repeat it at every site.
  • Reach out. Gambling Therapy offers free online support internationally, and a doctor or counsellor can point you to local help.

Gambling should be entertainment you can afford, never a plan to make money. See our responsible gambling tools guide for how each limit works.

Tanzania and its neighbours

Tanzania sits between two other licensed markets. Kenya is moving its licensing to a new Gambling Regulatory Authority, and Uganda licenses online play but only for players 25 and over. To the west, Rwanda licenses gaming through the Rwanda Development Board, while Burundi licenses betting through its national lottery but has no online casino framework.

Quick summary

  • Online casinos and betting are legal in Tanzania at Gaming Board-licensed sites, for players 18 and over.
  • SportPesa Tanzania, M-Bet, Meridianbet and Gal Sport Betting are licensed locally.
  • M-Pesa, Airtel Money, Mixx by Yas and HaloPesa are the usual deposit methods.
  • 1Win and the other brands above accept Tanzanians under foreign licences.
  • Set limits first, and stop when it stops being fun.

Frequently asked questions

Is online betting legal in Tanzania?

Yes. The Gaming Board of Tanzania licenses sports betting, casinos and online gaming under the Gaming Act, and the minimum age is 18. Licensed operators have to meet the board's rules; foreign-licensed sites do not answer to it.

Who regulates gambling in Tanzania?

The Gaming Board of Tanzania (gamingboard.go.tz). It issues licences for betting shops, online bookmakers, casinos and online casino games.

What happened to Tigo Pesa?

Tigo Pesa has been rebranded as Mixx by Yas. It works the same way for betting deposits and withdrawals as M-Pesa, Airtel Money and HaloPesa.

Is 1Win available in Tanzania?

Yes, 1Win accepts Tanzanian players and leads our list. It holds a Curaçao licence, not a Gaming Board of Tanzania licence, so disputes go to the foreign regulator.

Which betting sites are licensed in Tanzania?

Locally licensed names include SportPesa Tanzania, M-Bet, Meridianbet and Gal Sport Betting. Always check the licence on the operator's own site before you deposit.
