Online casinos and betting in Burundi

Sports betting in Burundi, online included, is licensed by the national lottery (LONA), which publishes a list of authorised operators such as Bubet and Rahisibet. Online casinos have no framework, and casinos were suspended in 2023. Burundians who bet online mostly use offshore sites and pay with EcoCash, Lumicash or USDT.

Local operators: Bubet, Méga Loto, Rahisibet, King's Bet.

Burundi’s gambling is run by the Loterie Nationale du Burundi (LONA). It licenses sports betting, in shops and online, and publishes a list of authorised online bookmakers, including Bubet, Méga Loto, Rahisibet and King’s Bet. Under a national strategy adopted in 2023, LONA is giving up its own games to become a pure regulator, a change due by mid-2026. It has also warned publicly about operators running without a licence.

Online casinos are a different story: there is no framework for them, and the government suspended casino operations in October 2023. So in our data sports betting is licensed and online casinos are unclear. We could not confirm a legal minimum gambling age.

This guide sets out what we know. It is not legal advice, and the position may change as East African neighbours tighten their own rules.

Why the licence matters for you

With a LONA-authorised bookmaker, you can check its licence and complain to LONA if it treats you unfairly. With offshore sites, and with any online casino, that safety net isn’t there. In practice:

  • Nobody local oversees offshore sites. If an international casino refuses to pay, there is no Burundian authority to turn to.
  • Your protection depends on the foreign licence. That makes the choice of site far more important.
  • Rules could change. LONA is building a system to monitor betting payments and has warned about unlicensed operators, so blocking foreign sites or taxing winnings could follow. Keep an eye on local news.

The international sites that accept Burundians

The list above shows the brands that accept players from Burundi, led by 1Win. The others are the 1xBet family (1xBet, 22Bet, Melbet, Betwinner, Megapari and PariPesa) and the crypto casinos BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit.

All of them hold foreign licences, mostly from Curaçao, with BC.Game licensed in Anjouan. Before you choose:

  • Look for the licence number in the site footer, and check that it matches the company named in the terms.
  • Read the withdrawal rules: minimum amounts, limits and how long processing takes.
  • Study any bonus. 1Win advertises a 500% welcome package across several deposits. We have not confirmed its terms for Burundi, so check the wagering requirement in the cashier first. Our guide to wagering requirements shows how to work out the real cost.

Paying with EcoCash, Lumicash and USDT

Mobile money is how most Burundians pay for things, and two wallets lead in our data:

  • Lumicash
  • EcoCash

Both work in Burundian francs (BIF). Local betting operators may accept them, but international sites support them unevenly. Where they aren’t offered, players typically use crypto, mainly Tether (USDT), a stablecoin tied to the US dollar.

USDT has its own costs and risks:

  • you pay a spread when you buy it with francs and again when you sell it;
  • the franc’s value against the dollar can move while your money is on the site;
  • sending on the wrong network, or to the wrong address, loses the funds for good.

If you’re new to crypto, read our crypto casino guide before you start, and send a small test amount first.

Account currency. Offshore sites rarely hold balances in francs. If yours is in US dollars or euros, each deposit and withdrawal is converted. That cost is invisible unless you look for it.

Verification. Upload your ID as soon as you register. The first withdrawal is when sites check documents, and having them approved early avoids a long wait.

What a bonus costs in francs

Big percentage bonuses look generous, but the wagering decides what they’re worth. A simple example, not tied to any brand: you deposit FBu 20,000 and receive a 100% match, another FBu 20,000 in bonus money. With 30x wagering on the bonus, you must bet FBu 600,000 before withdrawing. On slots that return around 96% over time, that much betting costs about FBu 24,000 on average, more than the bonus. Often the better choice is a smaller bonus with low wagering, or none at all.

Language and support

Kirundi, French and English are all used in Burundi. Most of the international brands above offer a French version of their site, which helps when you are reading bonus rules or withdrawal terms. Before depositing, open the live chat and ask a simple question in the language you prefer. If the answer is slow, vague or only in a language you don’t read well, that tells you how a real dispute would go.

Football: Ligue A and the European giants

Football is Burundi’s sport. The domestic Burundi Ligue A has a loyal following, but most betting goes on Europe: France’s Ligue 1, the English Premier League, the Champions League and La Liga. The French-language connection makes Ligue 1 more prominent than in English-speaking East Africa.

International sites cover European football in great depth, including in-play markets and bet builders. Local leagues are covered more thinly, and odds on obscure matches carry bigger margins. Our guide to how betting odds work shows how to spot the margin in a price.

Responsible gambling in Burundi

We could not confirm a national gambling helpline in Burundi. With offshore sites outside LONA’s reach, the tools in your own account are your best protection:

  • Set a deposit limit before your first bet.
  • Use time-outs when you notice yourself chasing losses.
  • Self-exclude if betting is hurting your money or family life, and do it at every site you use.
  • Talk to someone you trust, or use a free online service such as Gambling Therapy.

Betting is a form of entertainment that costs money. It is never a way to earn a living. Our responsible gambling tools guide explains each limit and how to set it.

Burundi and its neighbours

Burundi’s neighbours have moved further. Rwanda licenses betting, casinos and online gaming through the Rwanda Development Board, and Tanzania licenses online casinos through its Gaming Board. To the west, the Democratic Republic of the Congo licenses sports betting but has no clear online casino framework either.

The essentials

  • Bubet, Méga Loto, Rahisibet and King’s Bet are among the LONA-authorised bookmakers.
  • LONA licenses sports betting, online included, and lists the authorised bookmakers; online casinos have no framework.
  • Lumicash and EcoCash are the main wallets; offshore sites often rely on USDT.
  • 1Win and the brands above accept Burundians under foreign licences.
  • Set your limits first and bet only what you can afford to lose.
