Online casinos and betting in Eritrea

The situation in brief

Eritrea is one of the hardest places in Africa to say anything definite about online gambling. Two facts shape everything on this page:

• No licensing framework. We could not identify any law or regulator that licenses gambling in Eritrea, online or otherwise. Both online casinos and sports betting are marked unclear in our data, and we could not confirm a minimum age.
• Very limited internet access. Internet penetration in Eritrea is among the lowest in the world, and connections are slow and costly. For most people, online gambling simply isn’t a practical option. Where people do get online, it is often through shared or public connections, which are a poor place to log in to any account that holds money.

This page describes the position as far as we could establish it. It is not legal advice, and it is not an encouragement to gamble.

Why we list so few sites

For most African countries, our list includes a dozen or so international brands. For Eritrea it shows only three: 1Win, BC.Game and Cloudbet. These are the brands whose terms do not restrict Eritrea, and they are the only ones we could confirm.

We deliberately left out brands such as the 1xBet family. Eritrea is one of a small group of markets in our data, alongside South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Sudan and Libya, where conflict, restrictions or isolation make coverage hard to confirm. Rather than guess, we list only what we could check.

All three are licensed abroad: 1Win and Cloudbet in Curaçao, BC.Game in Anjouan. None is licensed in Eritrea, and no Eritrean authority oversees them.

What that means in practice

If someone in Eritrea does use one of these sites, they should understand how little protection there is:

• No local recourse. If a withdrawal is refused, there is no Eritrean regulator or court route designed for it. Complaints go to the foreign licensing body.
• Unreliable access. Slow or interrupted connections can drop you out of a live game or an in-play bet. Sites usually settle according to their own rules when a connection drops, which may not be in your favour.
• Restricted-country risk. Brands review their country lists. If Eritrea is added to a restricted list, accounts can be closed and winnings voided.
• Bonus conditions. 1Win advertises a 500% welcome package over several deposits, but we have not confirmed its terms for Eritrea. With so little protection, a bonus with heavy wagering is a poor idea; our wagering requirements guide explains why.

Payments: crypto only

Our data lists only one payment route for Eritrea: Tether (USDT), a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. We could not confirm any mobile money wallet, card or bank method that works for gambling.

Crypto carries its own risks:

• buying and selling USDT for nakfa (ERN) depends on finding a trustworthy counterparty;
• transfers cannot be reversed, so a wrong address or network means the money is lost;
• scams around crypto purchases are common wherever regulated options are scarce.

Why we keep this page short on promotion

Most of our country guides spend time comparing bonuses and payment methods. For Eritrea we have deliberately not done that. With no licensing framework, very limited connectivity, a single crypto payment route and only three brands confirmed, the honest advice is caution. If you do decide to play, keep amounts small, avoid bonuses with heavy wagering, complete verification before you deposit anything meaningful, and stop the moment it stops being fun.

Sport

Football is popular in Eritrea, with the Eritrean Premier League at home and the English Premier League, the Champions League and La Liga followed by fans. Cycling is the other national sport: Eritrean riders have made their mark in international professional cycling, and road racing draws big crowds. Betting markets on cycling exist mainly around the major international races.

Eritreans living abroad

Many Eritreans live outside the country, and the rules that apply to them depend on where they are, not on their nationality. Someone living in a country with a licensed market, such as Kenya or Uganda in East Africa, can use operators licensed there and benefit from local protections. In Uganda, the minimum age is 25.

If you are abroad, it is usually far safer to use a site licensed where you live than an offshore one, because you then have a local regulator to complain to if something goes wrong.

Connection problems and bet settlement

Unreliable internet is not just an inconvenience. If your connection drops during a live casino round or an in-play bet, the site settles the bet under its own rules, which are set out in its terms and do not always favour the player. Read the “disconnection” or “malfunction” section of the terms before you play anything live. Pre-match bets, placed and confirmed before the game starts, are much less exposed to this problem.

If gambling is causing harm

We could not confirm a national gambling helpline in Eritrea. If you or someone close to you is struggling:

• use self-exclusion on every site you have an account with;
• set deposit limits before you play, never after a loss;
• talk to someone you trust, such as family, a friend or a doctor;

Eritrea in the Horn of Africa

Neighbouring countries take different lines. Ethiopia licenses sports betting through its state lottery, Djibouti has no specific online gambling law, and Somalia prohibits gambling outright.
