Online casinos and betting in South Sudan

The situation in brief

South Sudan is the world’s youngest country, and years of conflict and economic crisis have left many areas of law undeveloped. Gambling is one of them. We could not identify any national framework for online gambling: no licence, no named regulator and no clear ban. Both online casinos and online sports betting are marked unclear in our data, and we could not confirm a minimum age.

This page sets out what we could establish. It is not legal advice, and it is not an encouragement to gamble. In a market with this little structure, players have very few protections.

Why the list is so short

For most countries in this series, a dozen or more international brands accept players. For South Sudan, our list has just two:

• BC.Game, licensed in Anjouan
• Cloudbet, licensed in Curaçao

1Win is not available. South Sudan is on 1Win’s restricted-country list, which makes it the only African country in our data where 1Win does not accept players. Any site claiming to offer “1Win South Sudan” is not the real 1Win; avoid it.

Anyone in South Sudan considering BC.Game or Cloudbet should weigh the risks carefully:

• No local protection. There is no South Sudanese regulator to complain to. Disputes go to the foreign licensing body.

Most of our country guides compare bonuses and payment options in detail. For South Sudan we have deliberately kept that to a minimum. With no national framework, only two confirmed sites, crypto as the practical payment route and a volatile currency, the honest advice is caution. Football and basketball are the most popular sports. The South Sudan Premier League is the domestic football league, while fans follow the English Premier League, the Champions League and La Liga. Basketball has a special place: South Sudan’s national team has risen fast on the international stage, and many South Sudanese-born players have played in leagues abroad.

South Sudanese living in neighbouring countries

Many South Sudanese live in neighbouring countries, and the rules that apply are those of the country you are in. In Uganda, betting and online gaming are licensed but the minimum age is 25. In Kenya, licensed operators are legal for adults aged 18 and over, and unlicensed sites can be blocked. Kenya and Uganda both run licensing systems for online betting (Uganda only for players aged 25 and over), Ethiopia licenses sports betting through its state lottery, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo licenses sports betting but has no online casino framework.
