Local operators: Bantubet.
Mozambique has a long coastline, a long border with South Africa and a betting scene shaped by both Portuguese and English-language football. It also has a gambling law that clearly covers online sports betting but leaves online casinos in a grey area. Here’s what that means, which sites accept Mozambicans, and how to deposit in meticais with M-Pesa, e-Mola or mKesh.
Gambling law in Mozambique
Gambling is regulated by the Inspecção Geral de Jogos (the General Gaming Inspectorate) under the Gaming Law, Law 1/2010. Two things are clear from our research:
- Sports betting operators are licensed, and that licensing extends to online betting.
- Online casino licensing is unclear. We couldn’t confirm a licence route for online slots and live casino games.
So a Mozambican who wants to bet on football online can do so with a locally licensed operator that answers to the Inspecção Geral de Jogos. A Mozambican who wants online casino games will mostly find them at international sites licensed abroad, which the local regulator doesn’t supervise.
We couldn’t confirm a website for the Inspecção Geral de Jogos. This guide is general information, not legal advice; for a firm answer about your own position, speak to a Mozambican lawyer.
Local licensed operators
Our data lists Bantubet as a licensed local bookmaker. Other pan-African names, including Betika and Betway’s African sites, are reported to operate in Mozambique, but they’re not yet in our brand data, and Betway’s African sites are separate companies from the Betway we review for South Africa. Check any local operator’s licence on its own site.
The advantages of a local licence are simple: a regulator at home to complain to, accounts in meticais, and payment methods built for Mozambique.
International sites that accept Mozambicans
The ranked list above shows the international brands our research confirms accept players from Mozambique:
- 1Win, our top choice, with a big casino, crash games and a full sportsbook. Its welcome package is a percentage match spread over your first deposits; the version offered in Mozambique may have different caps and terms from the South African offer shown on the rest of this site, so check the cashier.
- 1xBet and its sister brands 22Bet, Melbet, Betwinner, Megapari and PariPesa, with wide football coverage and long payment menus.
- BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit, crypto sites with quick crypto payouts.
All of them hold offshore licences, in Curaçao or, for BC.Game, Anjouan. The Inspecção Geral de Jogos hasn’t licensed them.
South African brands are SA-only
Mozambicans living near the border, or working in South Africa, often ask about the SA brands. Hollywoodbets, Betway South Africa, Supabets, Sunbet and the other South African bookmakers don’t accept players resident in Mozambique. Their provincial licences cover betting from within South Africa, and our data lists none of them for Mozambique.
Paying with M-Pesa, e-Mola and mKesh
Mobile money is the everyday payment method in Mozambique. The three wallets in our data are:
- M-Pesa
- e-Mola
- mKesh
Local bookmakers are built around these. International sites vary: some accept M-Pesa through payment partners, others offer only cards and crypto. Set your country to Mozambique, open the cashier, and confirm your wallet is available for withdrawals as well as deposits before you register.
Other options:
- Visa cards, accepted by most international sites, though banks sometimes decline gambling payments to offshore merchants
- Crypto, mainly Tether (USDT), which is the fastest way to withdraw from crypto-first sites but requires an exchange to get back to meticais
Meticais and conversion
Local bookmakers run accounts in meticais. International sites usually hold balances in US dollars, euros or crypto, so you’ll pay an exchange margin on deposits and withdrawals. Pick your account currency carefully at sign-up; many sites won’t let you change it later.
What to watch for at offshore sites
- No local complaints route. Disputes go to the site’s support and then its licensing body abroad.
- Verification before payout. Have your BI (identity card) or passport and proof of address ready.
- Bonus wagering. Percentage matches come with wagering, maximum bet and game rules. Our guide to wagering requirements shows what a bonus really costs.
- Language. Many international sites offer Portuguese, but terms and support can vary by language. If something matters, check the English terms too.
Our guide to offshore and locally licensed sites explains these trade-offs in more depth.
Sports Mozambicans bet on
Football leads, with a strong Portuguese accent:
- Moçambola, Mozambique’s top league
- Liga Portugal, followed closely thanks to the language and historic ties
- the English Premier League, the UEFA Champions League and La Liga
Basketball is the other sport in our data; international sportsbooks focus on the bigger international competitions. For Moçambola matches, local bookmakers are the natural first stop; international sites often have deeper markets on Liga Portugal and European football. Our guide to how betting odds work shows how to compare prices between them.
Nearby countries: Malawi, Zimbabwe and Eswatini. For another Portuguese-speaking market, see Angola.
Local or international: which suits you?
The choice in Mozambique is clearer than in many neighbouring countries, because online betting has a licensing route:
- For football betting, a licensed local bookmaker offers meticais accounts, mobile money and a regulator at home. Start there.
- For casino and crash games, the international sites above have the biggest lobbies, but they’re not supervised locally.
- For crypto users, BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit pay out fastest, provided you’re comfortable converting USDT back to meticais.
If you open accounts in both places, give each one its own weekly budget and stick to it. Register with your real details, verify early and try a small withdrawal before depositing more.
Responsible gambling in Mozambique
Our data doesn’t include a confirmed national gambling helpline for Mozambique. The NRGP number in the box below is South Africa’s line. The tools to use are at your betting site: deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs and self-exclusion. Locally licensed bookmakers are supervised by the Inspecção Geral de Jogos, which adds a layer of protection.
If gambling is causing money worries or problems at home, take a break and talk to someone you trust or a health professional. Our responsible gambling tools guide explains how each tool works. Gambling should cost you only what you’ve planned to spend on entertainment.
