Local operators: Premier Bet, World Star Betting.

Malawi is one of the clearer markets in Southern Africa for online sports betting: there’s a regulator, it licenses online betting, and several well-known local brands hold licences. Online casinos are less settled. This guide explains the difference, which sites accept Malawians, and how to deposit and withdraw in kwacha using Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba.

Who regulates gambling in Malawi?

The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority licenses casinos, sports betting and lotteries. Crucially, its licensing covers online sports betting, which puts Malawi ahead of neighbours like Zambia, whose betting law is premises-based, or Mozambique, where online casino rules are unclear.

What we couldn’t confirm is a licence category for online casino games. Land-based casinos are licensed, and so is betting online, but whether a site can legally offer slots and live casino to Malawians under a local licence isn’t clear from the research. We mark the online casino status as unclear.

So, in short:

  • Online sports betting: licensed. Use a locally licensed bookmaker if you want the Authority behind you.
  • Online casinos: unclear. Casino games are mostly offered by international sites licensed abroad.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Licensed local bookmakers

Our data lists two licensed local operators:

  • Premier Bet, a pan-African brand with a licensed operation in Malawi
  • World Star Betting, also licensed locally

Other pan-African bookmakers with local licences in several countries, such as BetPawa, Betika and Gal Sport Betting, are also reported to operate in Malawi, but they’re not yet in our brand data, so check each one’s licence on its own site.

Local bookmakers have two big advantages: they’re supervised by the Authority, and they’re built around Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba, so deposits and withdrawals are simple. If you mainly want casino games, compare their lobbies with the international sites below before you choose.

International sites that accept Malawians

The ranked list above shows the offshore brands our research confirms accept players from Malawi:

  • 1Win is our first choice for an all-in-one account. It has thousands of casino games, crash games like Aviator and a full sportsbook. The welcome package is a percentage match over your first few deposits; the cashier shows the cap and terms for Malawi, which may differ from the South African offer elsewhere on this site.
  • The 1xBet family, meaning 1xBet, 22Bet, Melbet, Betwinner, Megapari and PariPesa, offers huge football coverage and long payment menus.
  • BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit are crypto-first, with fast payouts in crypto.

None of these is licensed by the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority. They hold licences from Curaçao or Anjouan.

What about South African sites?

Hollywoodbets, Betway’s South African site, Supabets, Sunbet and the other SA bookmakers don’t accept players from Malawi. Their South African provincial licences cover betting from within South Africa, and our data lists them for South Africa only.

Paying with Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba

Malawi’s two mobile money wallets are:

  • Airtel Money
  • TNM Mpamba

These are the standard way to deposit at local bookmakers. Some international sites accept them through payment partners, but coverage is uneven. Before you register anywhere, open the cashier with your country set to Malawi and check that your wallet is offered for withdrawals as well as deposits.

Cards are less common in our Malawi data, so the main alternative at offshore sites is crypto, mostly Tether (USDT). USDT gives quick payouts at crypto sites, but you’ll need an exchange or a trusted peer-to-peer route to turn it back into kwacha, and each step can carry a fee. Our crypto casino guide explains wallets and networks; it’s written for South Africa, but the basics are the same.

Currency and conversion

Local bookmakers run accounts in kwacha. International sites usually work in US dollars, euros or crypto, so deposits and withdrawals are converted and your balance moves with the exchange rate. Factor those costs in, especially if you deposit small amounts often.

Before you sign up with an offshore site

  • Check the licence in the footer, with a licence number.
  • Verify your account early. Have your national ID or passport ready; withdrawals wait for verification.
  • Read the bonus terms. Wagering requirements decide whether a percentage match is worth taking. Our guide to wagering requirements shows the maths.
  • Start small. Test a small deposit and withdrawal before you commit more money.

The guide to offshore and locally licensed sites explains what you give up without a local regulator.

Football betting in Malawi

Football is the sport. The Super League of Malawi is the local top division, and local bookmakers are the natural place to look for its markets. For international football, the English Premier League, the UEFA Champions League and La Liga have the deepest markets and the keenest prices.

Long accumulators on small stakes are tempting. They’re fun, but the odds against them grow quickly, and the bookmaker’s margin compounds with every leg. Our accumulator guide and our bankroll management guide explain how to bet more sensibly.

Neighbouring countries: Zambia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Choosing between a local and an offshore account

For most Malawians the decision comes down to what you play:

  • Mainly football? A licensed local bookmaker gives you Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba payments in kwacha, local league coverage and a regulator at home. That’s hard to beat.
  • Mainly casino games or crash games? International sites have far bigger lobbies, but you trade away local supervision and usually pay a currency conversion.
  • Both? Keep them in separate budgets. Decide each week’s total before you start, split it between accounts and stop when it’s gone.

Whatever you choose, register with details that match your ID, verify early and test a small withdrawal before you deposit larger amounts.

Responsible gambling in Malawi

We couldn’t confirm a national gambling helpline for Malawi. The NRGP number in the box below is South Africa’s service. Use the tools at your bookmaker instead: deposit limits, stake limits, time-outs and self-exclusion. Locally licensed bookmakers are also supervised by the Authority, which sets the rules they must follow.

If gambling is causing money problems or stress at home, stop and talk to someone you trust or a health worker. Our responsible gambling tools guide explains each option. Never bet money meant for food, rent or school fees.
