Online casinos and betting in Namibia

Namibia licenses land-based casinos and bookmakers through national gambling authorities under the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, but no online casino licence exists yet. Offshore sites such as 1Win, the 1xBet family, BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit accept Namibians; SA-licensed brands don't.

Namibia sits right next to South Africa, shares its currency peg and follows a lot of the same football and rugby, so it’s easy to assume South African betting sites work there too. They don’t. This guide covers what Namibian law says about online gambling, which international sites accept Namibians and how to get money in and out.

What the law says about online gambling in Namibia

Gambling in Namibia falls under the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, through the national gambling authorities it oversees. They license land-based casinos and bookmakers, and sports betting is a licensed activity.

Online casinos are where it gets vague. The research behind this guide found that online casino licensing has not been established, and we couldn’t confirm a named regulator with an online licensing process. So:

  • Land-based casinos and betting shops operate under local licences.
  • Online casino games are offered to Namibians by international sites licensed in Curaçao or Anjouan, not by Namibian licence holders.
  • Whether playing at those sites is permitted isn’t clearly settled. We mark the online casino status as unclear rather than legal or illegal.

Nothing on this page is legal advice. If you need a firm answer for your own situation, ask the ministry or a Namibian lawyer.

Why South African brands don’t accept Namibians

The rand is legal tender in Namibia alongside the Namibian dollar, and many Namibians follow the same PSL football and rugby as South Africans. Even so, Hollywoodbets, Betway South Africa, Supabets, Sunbet, Playabets and the other SA bookmakers don’t take Namibian players. Their licences come from South African provincial gambling boards, and those licences cover people betting from within South Africa.

Our data lists these brands for South Africa only. If you live in Namibia, the brands in the ranked list above are the ones our research shows accept you.

Sites that accept Namibian players

All the international sites ranked above hold offshore licences. Here’s how they differ:

  • 1Win is our first choice. It has a large casino, crash games such as Aviator and Lucky Jet, and a full sportsbook. The welcome package is a percentage match over your first deposits; check the cashier for the cap and terms offered in Namibia.
  • 1xBet and its sister brands (22Bet, Melbet, Betwinner, Megapari and PariPesa) share a similar platform with wide market coverage and frequent promotions. Pick one and stick with it rather than juggling several near-identical accounts.
  • BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit are crypto-first. They suit you if you already hold crypto, because withdrawals are fast and don’t depend on a bank.

Roobet isn’t listed: one source puts Namibia on its restricted list, and sources conflict.

Deposits and withdrawals in Namibia

Namibia is more of a banking market than a mobile money market. The common options are:

  • EFT from a Namibian bank account, where the site supports it
  • Visa and Mastercard, the most widely accepted option at international sites, though some banks decline payments to offshore gambling merchants
  • FNB eWallet and Bank Windhoek EasyWallet, which are popular for sending money but rarely appear in offshore cashiers
  • Crypto, mainly Tether (USDT), which is often the fastest way to withdraw

FNB’s South African eWallet has its own page on this site (FNB eWallet), but the Namibian service is run by FNB Namibia, so check what an operator actually supports before you assume it works.

Currency and verification

Namibian dollars are pegged one-to-one to the rand, but offshore sites rarely offer either currency. Expect to play in US dollars, euros or crypto and to pay a conversion margin on the way in and out. Before your first withdrawal, the site will usually ask for your ID card or passport, and sometimes a recent utility bill. Sort that out early.

What to check before you sign up

Because no Namibian body licenses online casinos, you’re relying on the site’s own licence and reputation. A short checklist:

  1. Find the licence. It should be named in the footer with a licence number. Curaçao and Anjouan are the most common for the brands above.
  2. Read the bonus terms. Wagering requirements, game weighting and maximum bet rules decide whether a bonus is worth taking. Our guide to wagering requirements shows the maths.
  3. Check withdrawal limits. Many sites cap daily or weekly withdrawals and set a minimum withdrawal amount.
  4. Make a small first deposit. Test the deposit and withdrawal route with a small amount before you commit more.

Our guide comparing offshore and locally licensed casinos explains the trade-offs in more depth.

Sports Namibians bet on

Football and rugby are the two big betting sports. Locally, the Namibia Premiership is the top football league. Abroad, the English Premier League, the Champions League and La Liga are the favourites, as they are across Southern Africa.

Rugby gives Namibia a different flavour from most African markets. International sportsbooks price Test rugby, including Namibia’s own national side, and the major club competitions, but local Namibian club rugby is rarely covered online. Getting started from Namibia

  1. Choose one site from the ranked list and look up its licence in the footer.
  2. Register with details that match your ID, so verification goes smoothly.
  3. Choose your account currency with care: US dollars are usually the simplest option at offshore sites.
  4. Pick your payment route. A card or EFT is the most likely to work for deposits; for withdrawals, check whether the site pays back to your card, to a bank account or only in crypto.
  5. Verify, then test a small withdrawal before you deposit larger amounts.

Responsible gambling in Namibia

We couldn’t confirm a national gambling helpline for Namibia. The NRGP number shown in the box below is South Africa’s service. If you’re in Namibia, the practical tools are:

  • Deposit, loss and session limits, which you can set in your account at most international sites
  • Self-exclusion, which locks your account for a set period or permanently
  • Blocking gambling payments through your bank, if it offers that option

If gambling is no longer fun, stop and talk to someone: a friend, your family or your doctor. Our guide to responsible gambling tools walks through each option. Never chase losses, and never bet money you need for bills.

Frequently asked questions

Is online gambling legal in Namibia?

Namibia licenses land-based casinos and bookmakers, but it hasn't established online casino licensing, so the status of online casinos is unclear. Sports betting is a licensed activity. International sites accept Namibians under offshore licences. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can Namibians use South African betting sites?

No. Hollywoodbets, Betway South Africa, Supabets, Sunbet and the other SA brands are licensed by South African provincial boards for players in South Africa only. Even though the rand is legal tender in Namibia, those sites don't open accounts for Namibian residents.

Can I deposit with FNB eWallet or EasyWallet?

FNB eWallet and Bank Windhoek EasyWallet are Namibia's best-known mobile money services, but international casino sites rarely support them directly. EFT, Visa, Mastercard and crypto such as USDT are the more common routes at offshore sites.

What is the gambling age in Namibia?

The minimum age is 18. International sites set 18 as their own minimum too and verify your age with an ID document.

Do I pay in Namibian dollars at offshore casinos?

Usually not. Most international sites hold your balance in US dollars, euros or crypto, so deposits and withdrawals are converted. Check the account currency when you register, because it often can't be changed later.
