Online casinos and betting in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's Lotteries and Gaming Board licenses casinos, sports betting and lotteries, but there's no dedicated online casino licence, so online casinos are a grey area. 1Win, the 1xBet family, BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit accept Zimbabweans, and EcoCash, OneMoney and InnBucks are the main wallets.

Local operators: Africabet.

Zimbabwe has a proper gambling regulator, a busy local betting scene and a currency situation unlike anywhere else in the region. Those three things shape how you should approach online casinos and betting sites. Here’s what the law says, which international sites accept Zimbabweans and how to handle ZiG, US dollars and mobile money.

Gambling law in Zimbabwe

Gambling is overseen by the Lotteries and Gaming Board under the Lotteries and Gaming Act. The Board licenses:

  • casinos
  • sports betting operators, including local brands such as Africabet
  • lotteries

What it doesn’t have is a dedicated online casino licence. The law was written for physical venues and betting shops, and the research behind this guide couldn’t find a separate licence category for casino games played online. So we mark online casinos as unclear: not clearly banned, not clearly licensed.

Sports betting is the more settled side. Licensed bookmakers operate in Zimbabwe, and if you want a local complaints route, a Board-licensed bookmaker is the way to get one. International sites that accept Zimbabweans aren’t licensed by the Board, so it can’t help you in a dispute with them.

This isn’t legal advice. The Board’s website, lgb.co.zw, is the authority on who holds a licence.

Local bookmakers vs international sites

You have two kinds of choice in Zimbabwe, and it’s worth being clear about the trade-off.

Locally licensed bookmakers like Africabet answer to the Lotteries and Gaming Board and are built around local payment methods and local football. If something goes wrong, you have a regulator at home to turn to.

International sites, the ones ranked above, hold licences in Curaçao or Anjouan. They offer thousands of casino games, crash games, deep markets on European football and percentage-match welcome bonuses. The cost is that no Zimbabwean body supervises them.

Many players use both: a local bookmaker for weekend football and an international site for casino games. If you do that, set a separate budget for each.

International sites that accept Zimbabweans

Our research confirms these brands accept players from Zimbabwe:

  • 1Win, our top pick, with a large casino, its own crash games and a full sportsbook. The welcome package is a percentage match spread over your first deposits; check the cashier for the terms offered in Zimbabwe, which may differ from the South African version on the rest of this site.
  • 1xBet, 22Bet, Melbet, Betwinner, Megapari and PariPesa, the 1xBet family, which share a platform with very wide market coverage.
  • BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit, crypto-first sites with fast payouts in crypto.

Roobet is missing because one source lists Zimbabwe as restricted and the evidence conflicts.

South African brands are not an option

Plenty of Zimbabweans know Hollywoodbets, Betway and Supabets from time spent in South Africa. Those SA sites don’t accept players living in Zimbabwe. Their licences come from South African provincial boards and cover bets placed in South Africa, and our data lists them for South Africa only.

Payments: EcoCash, ZiG and US dollars

Zimbabwe’s money situation affects every deposit. Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) replaced the RTGS dollar in April 2024, but US dollars are widely used for everyday payments. Many international sites run accounts in USD, which can save you a conversion if you’re depositing dollars.

The main mobile wallets are:

  • EcoCash
  • OneMoney
  • InnBucks

Local bookmakers are the likeliest to support them. International sites are patchier: some accept EcoCash through payment partners, others don’t. Open the cashier with your country set to Zimbabwe and check that your wallet is offered for both deposits and withdrawals.

Other options:

  • Visa and Mastercard, where your bank allows international gambling payments
  • Crypto, mostly Tether (USDT), a dollar-pegged stablecoin that pays out fastest at crypto sites

Our crypto casino guide is written for South Africans, but its advice on wallets, networks and fees applies just as well in Harare or Bulawayo.

What to watch for with offshore sites

  • Account currency. Choose USD if you hold dollars. Switching later is often impossible.
  • Verification. Have your national ID or passport and a proof of address ready. Withdrawals wait until you’re verified.
  • Bonus wagering. Big percentage matches come with wagering requirements and maximum bet rules. Our guide to wagering requirements shows what they really cost.
  • Withdrawal limits. Check the minimum withdrawal and any daily or weekly caps before you deposit.

Our comparison of offshore and locally licensed sites explains what an offshore licence means for complaints.

Sports Zimbabweans bet on

Zimbabwe is more varied than most African betting markets:

  • Football: the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League locally, plus the English Premier League, the Champions League and La Liga.
  • Cricket: Zimbabwe is a Test-playing nation, and international sportsbooks price Zimbabwe’s matches and the big T20 leagues.
  • Rugby: international Tests and the major club competitions.

Compare a local bookmaker and an international site on Premier Soccer League matches before you settle on one, because market depth varies. Our bankroll management guide is worth a read if you bet across several sports.

Nearby countries: Zambia, Mozambique and Botswana.

Signing up from Zimbabwe

A short routine saves most of the usual problems:

  1. Pick one site and check its licence in the footer.
  2. Register with your real details, matching your national ID or passport.
  3. Choose USD as your account currency if you hold dollars, so you avoid a conversion.
  4. Verify your account before your first meaningful deposit.
  5. Deposit a small amount with EcoCash, a card or USDT, then test a small withdrawal so you know how long payouts take.
  6. Set a deposit limit before you take any bonus.

Responsible gambling in Zimbabwe

We couldn’t confirm a national gambling helpline for Zimbabwe. The NRGP number in the box below is South Africa’s service. Use the tools your betting site offers: deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs and self-exclusion. EcoCash and bank accounts can also help you keep gambling money separate from household money.

If betting is causing debt, arguments or sleepless nights, stop and talk to someone you trust, a counsellor or a doctor. Our responsible gambling tools guide explains each tool. Gambling costs money; treat it as entertainment, never as income.

Frequently asked questions

Is online betting legal in Zimbabwe?

Sports betting is licensed by the Lotteries and Gaming Board under the Lotteries and Gaming Act, and locally licensed bookmakers such as Africabet operate. There's no dedicated online casino licence, so the status of online casinos is unclear. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I deposit with EcoCash at online casinos?

EcoCash, OneMoney and InnBucks are Zimbabwe's main mobile wallets. Local bookmakers support them widely; at international sites support varies, so check the cashier before you register. USDT is the common alternative at offshore sites.

Do South African betting sites accept Zimbabweans?

Not if you live in Zimbabwe. Hollywoodbets, Betway SA, Supabets, Sunbet and the other SA brands are licensed by South African provincial boards for people betting from South Africa, and our data lists them for South Africa only.

Can I play in US dollars?

Often, yes. Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) replaced the RTGS dollar in April 2024, but US dollars are widely used, and many international sites run accounts in USD. That avoids one layer of currency conversion if you hold dollars.

What is the gambling age in Zimbabwe?

The minimum age is 18. International sites also require you to be 18 or older and check ID before paying out.

Who regulates gambling in Zimbabwe?

The Lotteries and Gaming Board (lgb.co.zw) licenses casinos, sports betting and lotteries. It doesn't license offshore online casinos, so it can't help with disputes involving them.
