Online casinos and betting in Lesotho

Online gambling in Lesotho has no confirmed legal framework: land-based casinos and betting are licensed locally, but no online licensing body could be confirmed. Sites such as 1Win, the 1xBet family, BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit accept Basotho players; South African brands like Hollywoodbets don't.

Lesotho is entirely surrounded by South Africa, uses the rand alongside the loti and follows plenty of South African football. That makes it one of the most common places where people try to sign up with an SA bookmaker and get turned away. This guide explains why, what the law in Lesotho says (and doesn’t say) about online gambling, and which sites do accept Basotho players.

The honest answer is that the legal position isn’t clear. Our research found that land-based casinos and betting are licensed locally, but it couldn’t confirm:

  • a law that sets out rules for online casinos or online betting
  • a regulator that licenses online operators
  • a statutory minimum age for gambling online

Both the online casino and the sports betting status in our data are therefore marked unclear. That doesn’t mean online gambling is permitted, and it doesn’t mean it’s banned. It means there’s no framework we could find that speaks to it.

What it does mean in practice is that no locally licensed online casino exists that we know of. Every site that accepts players from Lesotho does so under a licence from somewhere else, usually Curaçao or, for BC.Game, Anjouan. If you need a legal opinion, speak to a lawyer in Maseru; this guide is general information only.

Why South African sites turn you away

This is the question we hear most from Lesotho. Hollywoodbets, Betway’s South African site, Supabets, Sunbet, Playabets, Easybet and the rest of the SA brands don’t accept players from Lesotho. None of them appears in our data for any country other than South Africa.

The reason is the licence. South African bookmakers are licensed by provincial gambling boards such as the Western Cape or Gauteng board, and those licences cover betting by people in South Africa. So a Lesotho address won’t get you an account, even if you bank in rands.

Which sites accept players from Lesotho?

The ranked list above shows the brands our research confirms accept Basotho, with 1Win first. In brief:

  • 1Win pairs a large casino and crash games with a full sportsbook. Its welcome package is a percentage match spread over your first deposits; the version you’ll see in Lesotho may have a different cap and terms from the South African offer, so read the cashier.
  • The 1xBet group, meaning 1xBet, 22Bet, Melbet, Betwinner, Megapari and PariPesa, has thousands of football markets a day and long payment menus.
  • BC.Game, Cloudbet and Rollbit are crypto casinos with sportsbooks. They’re the simplest choice if you already use crypto.

These are all offshore brands. They’re open to you, but they’re not regulated in Lesotho.

How to deposit from Lesotho

Mobile money is how most Basotho move money day to day, and the two main wallets are:

  • M-Pesa, the mobile money service most people know
  • EcoCash, the other main wallet

Some international sites accept these wallets through payment partners, but coverage is patchy and can change without notice. Open the cashier with your country set to Lesotho before you register, and check that your wallet is offered for withdrawals, not just deposits.

The fallback options are:

  • Visa debit and credit cards, which most international sites accept, although banks sometimes decline gambling payments to offshore merchants
  • Crypto, mostly Tether (USDT), which gives the fastest withdrawals at crypto-first sites but means buying and selling through an exchange

Loti, rand and conversion

The loti is pegged one-to-one to the rand, and the rand is legal tender in Lesotho. That doesn’t help much at offshore sites, which usually run accounts in US dollars, euros or crypto. Each deposit and withdrawal may be converted, and exchange margins add up over time. Choose your account currency carefully when you register, because many sites won’t let you change it later.

Points to watch with offshore brands

With no local regulator to fall back on, take a little more care than you would at home:

  • Verify early. Upload your ID and proof of address soon after registering. Sites hold withdrawals until verification is complete.
  • Understand the bonus. A big percentage match means nothing if the wagering is high. Our guide to wagering requirements shows how to work out the real cost.
  • Keep records. Screenshot deposits, bonus terms and support chats. If there’s a dispute, that’s your evidence for the site’s licensing body.
  • Watch the limits. Check minimum and maximum withdrawal amounts and any monthly caps in the terms.

The guide to offshore and locally licensed casinos explains more about how complaints work when there’s no local regulator.

Football betting in Lesotho

Football is the main sport. The Lesotho Premier League is the local top flight, but online markets for it can be thin, and not every international sportsbook carries it every week. Most betting goes on the English Premier League, the UEFA Champions League and La Liga, where prices and markets are much deeper.

If you like building multi-leg bets on weekend fixtures, read our accumulator guide first: each extra leg adds the bookmaker’s margin, so long accumulators lose more on average than short ones.

Lesotho’s neighbours have guides too. See Eswatini, which has a very similar legal picture, and Botswana.

Signing up from Lesotho, step by step

  1. Choose one site from the ranked list above and read its licence details in the footer.
  2. Register with your real name and date of birth, exactly as they appear on your ID.
  3. Pick an account currency. US dollars are usually the simplest choice at offshore sites.
  4. Upload your ID and proof of address straight away, so a withdrawal isn’t held up later.
  5. Deposit a small amount with M-Pesa, EcoCash, a card or USDT, and try a small withdrawal before you deposit more.

Responsible gambling in Lesotho

Our data doesn’t include a confirmed gambling helpline for Lesotho. The NRGP number in the box below is South Africa’s national service. If you’re in Lesotho, the tools that help most are:

  • Deposit and loss limits, set in your account before you play
  • Time-outs and self-exclusion, available at most international sites
  • Talking to someone, whether that’s a friend, family member, church or clinic, if gambling is causing stress or debt

Our guide to responsible gambling tools explains how limits and self-exclusion work. Betting should be a small, planned cost of entertainment, never a way to make money.

Frequently asked questions

Is online betting legal in Lesotho?

It's unclear. Lesotho licenses land-based casinos and betting locally, but we couldn't confirm an online gambling law or an online licensing body. International sites accept players from Lesotho under offshore licences. This isn't legal advice.

Can I use Hollywoodbets or Betway in Lesotho?

Not the South African sites. Hollywoodbets, Betway SA, Supabets, Sunbet and the other SA brands are licensed by South African provincial boards for players in South Africa. Living close to the border or using rands doesn't change that.

Can I deposit with M-Pesa or EcoCash?

M-Pesa and EcoCash are Lesotho's main mobile money wallets. Some international sites accept them through payment partners, but support changes often, so check the cashier first. Visa cards and USDT are the other common options.

What is the minimum gambling age in Lesotho?

We couldn't confirm a statutory minimum age for online gambling in Lesotho. Every international site on this page requires you to be at least 18 under its own terms and checks ID before withdrawals.

Which sports do Basotho bet on?

Football by a long way: the Lesotho Premier League locally, and the English Premier League, Champions League and La Liga internationally.
