Mines odds and strategy

In Mines you uncover tiles on a 5x5 grid and cash out before you hit a mine. With 3 mines, your first pick is safe 88% of the time and five safe picks in a row happen about half the time, paying roughly 1.96x. Every setting has the same 3% house edge, so strategy changes the risk, not the return.

Mines looks like a game of nerve: pick a tile, see a gem, pick again or cash out. Underneath it’s one of the most transparent games in any casino, because you can work out the exact odds of every decision. This guide shows the maths and what it means for how you play.

How Mines works

  1. Choose your stake and the number of mines hidden on a 25-tile grid.
  2. Click a tile. A gem means it’s safe and your multiplier goes up. A mine ends the round and you lose your stake.
  3. After any safe pick you can cash out at the current multiplier, or keep going.

The mines are placed before your first click. In provably fair versions like Spribe’s, their positions come from a server seed and your client seed, and you can verify them after the round (see how provably fair works).

The odds of each pick

With m mines on a 25-tile board, your first pick is safe with probability (25 − m) ÷ 25. Each safe pick removes a safe tile, so the next pick is a little riskier. The chance of surviving several picks is the product of each step.

Here’s how that works out, together with the fair multiplier (the payout with no house edge) and the approximate payout at 97% RTP. Games show their exact multiplier before each pick; small differences from this table come from rounding.

Mines Safe picks Chance of surviving Fair multiplier Approx. payout at 97%
1 1 96% 1.04x 1.01x
1 5 80% 1.25x 1.21x
1 10 60% 1.67x 1.62x
3 1 88% 1.14x 1.10x
3 3 67% 1.49x 1.45x
3 5 49.6% 2.02x 1.96x
3 10 19.8% 5.05x 4.90x
5 3 49.6% 2.02x 1.96x
5 5 29.2% 3.43x 3.32x
10 3 19.8% 5.05x 4.90x
10 5 5.7% 17.7x 17.2x
24 1 4% 25x 24.25x

Notice two things:

  • Different routes, same price. Three picks with 5 mines has exactly the same odds and payout as five picks with 3 mines. The game doesn’t care how you get to a level of risk.
  • The edge is the same everywhere. In every row, the payout is about 97% of the fair multiplier. That’s the house edge: roughly 3% of every Rand you bet, on average, whatever you choose.

So what is a Mines “strategy”?

Because the edge never changes, a strategy is really a choice about risk per round. Here are the common approaches, with what they actually do.

Low risk: 1 to 3 mines, cash out after 1 to 3 picks

You’ll win most rounds, but each win is small (1.01x to 1.45x). A single mine wipes out several wins. Good for long, quiet sessions on a small budget. It’s not a way to profit.

Medium risk: 3 to 5 mines, aim for about 2x

About half your rounds win and double your stake. This feels like a coin flip with a small edge against you, which is exactly what it is.

High risk: 10 or more mines, few picks

Most rounds lose on the first or second click. Occasionally you’ll land 5x, 17x or more. Budgets swing hard. Keep stakes small if you play this way.

“Patterns” and “safe tiles”

Some videos claim corners are safer, or that you should copy a pattern from the last round. Mine positions are random and independent each round, so every unopened tile has the same chance of hiding a mine. Patterns make no difference.

Martingale

Doubling your stake after each loss doesn’t work here any better than in crash games. It produces many small wins and an occasional catastrophic loss, with the same 3% average cost.

Tips that do help

  • Decide your cash-out point before the round. “One more tile” is how winning rounds turn into losing ones. Decide, for example, “3 mines, cash out after 4 picks” and stick to it.
  • Use flat stakes. Keep your bet the same size regardless of the last result.
  • Count your rounds, not just your Rands. Mines rounds take seconds. At R10 a round and four rounds a minute, you bet R2,400 an hour, with an expected cost of about R72.
  • Set a session budget and a win stop. Leave when either is reached.
  • Try the demo first. Play Mines for free with virtual money to see how often each setting wins before you use real money.

Withdrawing Mines winnings

Mines wins go straight to your balance, like any other casino win. If you played with bonus money, the wagering requirement has to be met first, and Mines may not count towards it. With real money there’s nothing extra to do: withdraw as normal once your account is verified. Our guide to the fastest withdrawal methods covers the options.

Mines vs other quick games

Mines sits between crash games and dice in how it feels:

  • Crash games like Aviator are shared rounds with a single multiplier for everyone; your only decision is when to cash out.
  • Mines is a private round where you make a decision after every pick, which makes it feel more skilful than it is.
  • Dice and Limbo are one-click bets on a target number, with no decisions after the bet.
  • Plinko drops a ball down a peg board, with the risk setting chosen before the drop.

All four are usually provably fair and priced at about 97% RTP. Choosing between them is a matter of taste, not of better odds. The one real difference is pace: the more rounds you play per minute, the faster the house edge adds up.

How to check a Mines round

After a round, open the game’s fairness panel to see the server seed, your client seed and the nonce. Paste them into our provably fair verifier to confirm where the mines were. If the hash of the revealed server seed matches the one you were shown before you played, the positions were fixed before your first click.

Mines and bonuses

Many casino bonuses exclude Mines and other instant games from wagering, or count them at a reduced rate, because the low-risk settings make wagering too easy to clear. Check the terms before using bonus money. Our guide to wagering requirements explains game weighting.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a winning strategy for Mines?

No. Each multiplier is priced from the true probability of surviving that many picks, minus the house edge. Picking corners, patterns or 'safe' tiles doesn't help, because mine positions are random and fixed before you start.

How many mines should I choose?

It depends on the ride you want. Fewer mines mean frequent small wins; more mines mean rare, large wins. The long-run cost is about 3% of what you bet either way.

What are the odds of hitting a mine on the first click?

It equals the number of mines divided by 25. With 3 mines that's 12%, with 5 mines 20%, and with 10 mines 40%.

Is Mines rigged?

Spribe's Mines and most crypto Mines games are provably fair: the mine positions are fixed by seeds before your first click, and you can verify them afterwards. It isn't rigged, but it does have a built-in house edge.

What is the max win on Mines?

Spribe's Mines has a published maximum win of 10,000x the stake. Reaching it needs many safe picks with a lot of mines on the board, which is extremely unlikely.
