Masterpass and Scan to Pay betting sites

Masterpass is now called Scan to Pay in South Africa, after Ukheshe took over Mastercard's local platform. You deposit by scanning a QR code with your banking app (FNB, Absa, Nedbank or Standard Bank) and approving the payment. In our data 10bet and SuperSportBet accept it; it's instant and free, but deposit-only.

How to deposit with Scan to Pay (Masterpass)

  1. Choose Masterpass or Scan to Pay in the cashier
  2. Open your banking app's QR scanner (FNB, Absa, Nedbank, Standard Bank) or a Scan to Pay app
  3. Scan the code and approve with your PIN

What Masterpass, now Scan to Pay, is

Masterpass was Mastercard’s digital wallet. In South Africa it became best known for its QR codes, which you could scan with a banking app to pay a shop, a bill or an online merchant. Fintech company Ukheshe has since acquired the South African Masterpass technology and rebranded it as Scan to Pay, Powered by Ukheshe. For players, the change is mostly a new name and logo: the codes and the way you pay work the same.

The key feature is that you don’t need a separate wallet app. The QR scanners in FNB, Absa, Nedbank and Standard Bank’s apps can read Scan to Pay codes and pay from your card or account.

Where you can deposit with Masterpass

Masterpass is one of the less common methods at South African betting sites. In our data it’s accepted by 10bet and SuperSportBet, both licensed locally. Both list it as a deposit method only.

Offshore casinos such as 1Win don’t list Masterpass in our data. If you play at 1Win and want to pay by phone, it accepts Zapper and SnapScan.

How to deposit with Masterpass / Scan to Pay

  1. Open the deposit page on the betting site and choose Masterpass or Scan to Pay.
  2. Enter the amount. A QR code appears.
  3. Open your banking app’s scanner: look for “Scan to Pay”, “Scan QR” or “Masterpass” in the FNB, Absa, Nedbank or Standard Bank app. A standalone Scan to Pay app also works.
  4. Scan the code, choose the card or account to pay from, and approve with your PIN or biometrics.
  5. The deposit shows instantly in your betting balance.

If you’re betting on your phone, some cashiers offer a link that opens your banking app directly, so you don’t have to scan your own screen.

Withdrawals

Scan to Pay can’t receive money, so withdrawals use the site’s other methods. At 10bet that includes instant EFT through Ozow; at both sites, standard bank EFT is available. Verify your account early to avoid hold-ups.

Fees, limits and speed

  • Fees: free for the player. Neither bookmaker in our data adds a fee.
  • Limits: the bookmaker’s minimum deposit and your bank’s daily card or payment limit. You can adjust those in your banking app.
  • Speed: instant.

Who it suits

Scan to Pay suits players who bank with FNB, Absa, Nedbank or Standard Bank and like using their banking app’s scanner. There’s nothing new to install and no card number to type in, and you approve every payment yourself.

The limitation is reach. With only two bookmakers in our data, you’ll probably need a second method anyway. Ozow works at more than 30 brands and pays straight from your account.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Works from the banking app you already have.
  • Card details stay private.
  • Instant and free.

Cons

  • Only two bookmakers in our data accept it.
  • Deposit only.
  • The rename means some cashiers still say Masterpass and others Scan to Pay, which can confuse.

Alternatives

If your bookmaker doesn’t list Masterpass, look for the other QR options: Zapper (eight brands) and SnapScan (seven brands). For account-to-account payments, use Ozow or Capitec Pay. If you’d rather pay with cash, 1Voucher and Blu Voucher are sold at most supermarkets. The full list is on our payments page.

Scan-and-pay is quick, so decide on your budget first. Use the deposit limits in your betting account, and call the NRGP on 0800 006 008 if you need support.
