Scratch cards

Online scratch cards work like the paper ones: buy a card, scratch the panels, and match symbols to win a prize. The result is decided the moment you buy, so there's no skill involved. They're simple and quick, and many have free demos, but their RTPs vary widely, so check before playing.

How scratch cards work

An online scratch card copies the paper version. You pick a card price, the card appears, and you scratch off the panels by swiping or tapping, or use “reveal all”. If the symbols underneath form the winning pattern, such as three matching amounts, you win the prize printed on the card.

The important point is that the result is decided when you buy the card. Scratching is just the reveal. There’s no way to influence it, and no difference between scratching slowly or revealing everything at once.

Types of scratch card

  • Match three: reveal amounts and win if three are the same.
  • Symbol cards: reveal a winning symbol and look for it among your panels.
  • Bonus cards: some include a bonus panel that awards an extra prize or a multiplier.
  • Themed cards: slot studios release scratch versions of popular slot themes.

RTP and odds

Scratch card RTPs vary more than slot RTPs. Some sit close to 95–96%, while others are noticeably lower. National lottery paper scratch cards in many countries return much less, because they fund good causes. Check the rules screen in the game for the RTP before you play.

Most cards pay small prizes, often equal to or below the card price, fairly often, with rare larger prizes.

If you like the instant reveal of scratch cards, these games have a similar quick pace:

  • King Thimbles: pick the thimble that hides the prize.
  • Falling Pickaxe: a single drop, then an instant result.
  • Keno: pick numbers and see an instant draw you can verify.
  • Plinko: one drop, one result, with a choice of risk.

Playing sensibly

Scratch cards are fast and cheap per card, which is exactly why they add up. Decide how many cards you’ll buy before you start, and don’t “buy one more” to chase a loss. Many bonus offers exclude scratch cards or count them at a reduced rate, so read the terms. The NRGP helpline is 0800 006 008.

Frequently asked questions

How do online scratch cards work?

You choose a card price, then scratch or reveal the panels with your finger or mouse. If the symbols match the winning pattern on the card, you win the prize shown. The outcome is set when you buy the card.

Do scratch cards have good odds?

It depends on the game. Online scratch cards often have RTPs similar to slots, but some are lower. The rules or paytable should show the RTP; check it before you play.

Is there any strategy for scratch cards?

No. The result is fixed when the card is bought, so the order you scratch in or how fast you play makes no difference.

Are scratch cards the same as instant win games?

They're one type of instant win game. Others, such as Chicken Road or Mines, involve choices after you bet; scratch cards don't.
