Self-exclusion

Self-exclusion is a voluntary ban you place on yourself to stop gambling for a set period, usually six months or longer. In South Africa you can self-exclude through an operator or a provincial gambling board, and free help is available from the NRGP on 0800 006 008.

Self-exclusion lets you block yourself from gambling when you want to stop or take a long break. It’s one of the responsible gambling tools every provincially licensed operator in South Africa must offer.

How it works:

  1. Choose the period. Self-exclusion is typically six months or longer. Shorter breaks are called time-outs or cooling-off periods.
  2. Apply through your account’s responsible gambling settings, through the operator’s support team, or through your provincial gambling board. Applying through a board can extend the block to other licensed operators in that province.
  3. The block takes effect. Your account is closed to betting and deposits, and marketing should stop. The operator checks new sign-ups against the exclusion list, using your FICA details.
  4. When it ends, reopening usually requires a request and sometimes a waiting period. It isn’t automatic.

Self-exclusion works best alongside other steps: deleting gambling apps, asking your bank to block gambling transactions where it offers that, and talking to someone. Offshore casinos also offer self-exclusion, but it applies only to that site and isn’t linked to South African registers.

If you’re worried about your gambling, or someone else’s, the National Responsible Gambling Programme offers free, confidential counselling on 0800 006 008, 24 hours a day. Frequently asked questions

How do I self-exclude from betting sites in South Africa?

Use the self-exclusion option in your account's responsible gambling settings, or ask the operator's support team. For SA-licensed operators you can also apply through your provincial gambling board.

Can I cancel self-exclusion early?

Usually not. Self-exclusion is designed to be hard to reverse, so you can't simply switch it off before the period ends. For a shorter break, use a time-out instead.

What's the difference between a time-out and self-exclusion?

A time-out is a short cooling-off break, from 24 hours to a few weeks. Self-exclusion is a longer block, typically six months or more, that can't be reversed early.
