Rakeback

Rakeback is a reward that returns a percentage of the fees or house edge you generate, paid back regularly. It started in poker, where the house takes a 'rake' from each pot, and crypto casinos now apply it to casino play based on how much you wager.

By Mark SmithChecked

Rakeback began in online poker. In cash games the poker room keeps a small cut of each pot, called the rake. Rakeback returns part of that rake to the players who paid it, typically 10% to 50% depending on your level or VIP status.

1Win, for example, offers Up to 50% poker rakeback every Monday.

Crypto casinos borrowed the idea for casino games. Instead of rake, they calculate the house edge on your wagers and return a share of it. If you wager R10,000 on a game with a 3% edge, your expected cost is R300; 10% rakeback would return about R30, whether you won or lost.

That last point is the key difference from cashback. Cashback refunds a share of net losses over a period, so you get nothing in a winning week. Rakeback is based on volume, so it rewards play regardless of results. Both lower your effective cost but neither removes it.

A few things to check: whether rakeback is paid as cash or as bonus funds, how often it’s credited, and whether it’s tied to a VIP scheme that rewards you for betting more. Never increase your play just to earn more rakeback; you’ll always lose more than it returns.

Frequently asked questions

What does rakeback mean?

It means getting back part of the rake (the fee taken from poker pots) or, at casinos, part of the house edge on your bets. It's usually paid daily, weekly or monthly.

Is rakeback the same as cashback?

Not quite. Cashback is usually a percentage of your net losses. Rakeback is a percentage of the fees or edge on everything you bet, so you get it whether you win or lose.

Does rakeback have wagering?

Often not, but it varies. Some sites pay rakeback as real money, others as bonus funds with wagering. Check the terms.
