KYC
KYC, short for know your customer, is the identity check a casino or betting site runs before it lets you withdraw. You usually need your ID, a recent proof of address and sometimes proof of your bank account. In South Africa, these checks are required under FICA.
KYC and FICA
KYC is the international term; in South Africa the same checks are usually called FICA, after the Financial Intelligence Centre Act. Read our FICA entry for the local rules. Every provincially licensed bookmaker must verify players, and reputable offshore casinos run similar checks under their own licences.
What gets checked
- Identity: that you are who you say you are, and over 18.
- Address: that you live where you registered.
- Payment method: that the bank account or card is in your name. Withdrawals normally go back to the same method you deposited with.
- Source of funds: for large deposits or wins, some sites ask where the money came from.
Tips for a smooth check
- Upload documents straight after you register, not when you want to withdraw.
- Make sure all four corners are visible and the text is sharp.
- Use the same name and address on your account as on your documents.
- Don’t use someone else’s card or bank account.
Slow KYC is one of the most common causes of delayed payouts. See our withdrawal limit entry for other things that affect how fast you get paid, and our fast payout casinos list for quick-paying sites.
Frequently asked questions
What documents do I need for KYC at a South African betting site?
Usually a green ID book, smart ID card or passport, plus a proof of address less than three months old, such as a utility bill or bank statement. Some sites also ask for a selfie or a bank confirmation letter.
Why do I have to verify my account before withdrawing?
Licensed operators must confirm who you are to prevent fraud, money laundering and underage gambling. Most let you deposit and play first, but they hold withdrawals until KYC is complete.
How long does KYC verification take?
Often a few hours to two working days, depending on the operator and the quality of your documents. Uploading clear, complete photos right after sign-up avoids delays on your first payout.
