Odin: Protector of the Realms Slot Game – Don Your Armour for Battle

Odin: Protector of the Realms Slot Game

Play‘n Go has a knack for developing epic fantasy-themed games, and Odin: Protector of the Realms is a cracking example of this. Launched during the busy summer of 2021 alongside such slots as Diamonds of the Realm, the Norse mythology-themed slot takes a popular theme and reimagines it with an entirely new engine, one quite unlike most other games on the market.

Hexagonal, honeycomb-style reels, animated deities, epic sound effects, and no shortage of unique goodies such as Forged Ring features help make Odin: Protector of the Realms to stand out in what is essentially an overcrowded market.

At first glance, Play‘n Go seems to have forged a remarkable, original game out of a tired old theme, but we won’t know for sure until we explore the rest of the slot in our review. Let’s get cracking…

Honey Rush Shares Its Gaming Engine

On the face of it, you’re looking at a truly original gaming engine, but there’s some digging to do. A “bonus box” sits away to the left of the reels, Odin stands proud to the right, and in the centre sits a hexagonal box of reels and symbols, almost honeycomb-like in its design, and that’s the give-away.

If you know your Play‘n Go slots, then you’ll instantly recognise that they have repurposed the engine of their Honey Rush slot and refitted it to work well with this Norse mythology game. We won’t hold that against them, though, as it works well in Odin: Protector of the Realms.

What this setup does is essentially give you a 4, 5, 6, 7, 6, 5 and 4-reel structure, with a total of thirty-seven symbols present in all. You need to connect at least five adjacently to pocket a win in a sort of Cluster Pays system.

Playing the game is cheap enough, with the Play‘n Go slot costing 0.20 up to 100.00 a pop. For your troubles, you can attempt to win up to 5,000x your bet. While a standard RTP sits at the 96.2% mark, Play‘n Go have opted to do something different with Odin: Protector of the Realms.

This game only offers medium volatility action, which is a breath of fresh air for any slot fans who have grown tired of the highly volatile releases churned out by the software provider of late.

Clusters or Cascades Yield Big Wins

Like most cluster pays or cascading reels slots, any winning combos you acquire on the reels will be removed. Naturally, new emblems will drop in a bid to try and help you create further groups of winning symbols.

Unlike some of its counterparts (most notably MegaWays and Tumbling Reels slots), there are no multipliers applied to chained wins. However, there is a wild. Appearing as Odin’s sword, this golden weapon can substitute for all standard paying symbols in the game.

Instead of multipliers, Odin: Protector of the Realms offers you something else – Forged Ring features. Whenever a win occurs, the symbols featured in it are added to that bonus box (Ring Meter) mentioned earlier. Once you have 30, 70 or 120 symbols in the so-called Ring Meter, you’ll trigger the Bronze, Silver, or Gold Forged Ring feature modes, respectively.

Each will create a pattern from the centre of the grid. Bronze, Silver and Gold Forged Ring feature modes can offer a minimum cluster of seven symbols, one between 12-19 symbols and one of 20-37 symbols, respectively. Naturally, these yield top wins.

Randomly Triggered Features Make a Difference, But No Bonus

There isn’t a bonus round (so, no free spins, for instance) in Odin: Protector of the Realms. However, Play‘n Go won’t leave you short-changed. They have included three randomly triggered modifiers that help to make a difference to your game. As these are triggered at random, there isn’t much you can do to influence them, but they do tend to occur at key points in the game. Just keep an eye on Odin to see if he moves. After all, they’ll come from him.

The Wisdom modifier adds a high-paying symbol or a wild (if there is already a high-paying symbol) to the central symbol, but only before a Forged Ring bonus kicks into gear.

The Power modifier destroys two types of symbols, but only when you’re just shy of triggering the next Forged Ring bonus and if no more chained wins are possible. Finally, the Glory modifier dishes out between two and eight wilds at random. This only occurs when the player has failed to land a win.

Odin: Protector of the Realms – Our Verdict

Odin: Protector of the Realms adds a new dynamic to the tired and sometimes battered Norse mythology slot genre. Yes, its features are a touch complicated, and it could do with a free spin round, but there is entertainment to be had in this release, especially if you are looking for the next big mythology-themed slot and one that stands out for being radically different.
