Maximus Reels – Newcomer to the scene Cayetano show us what they can do with this excellent release.
I believe the title Maximus Reels has a dual meaning here – firstly, the term Maximus is associated with the Roman Empire, which is the theme used for the visuals in this slot. Secondly, hitting three or more scatter symbols will begin a bonus round where the regular 5×3 reel set can be expanded to an enormous 7×5. The number of pay lines also increases when this happens, from 20 up to 100. I’d call that a Bonus Maximus, personally!
Maximus Reels Overview
This game was first previewed right the way back in December 2020 but has only just gone on mainstream release a few weeks ago on the 9th of March 2021. Maximus Reels has an RTP of 95.08% and is termed Medium to High variance by Red Tiger, despite offering a jackpot figure of 4,500x your stake. It seems we are just getting more and more used to huge numbers nowadays!
Symbols & Payouts
There’s a lot to take in on the pay table – it’s around thirteen pages long, because of the large number of payline diagrams for the bonus round. There are 20 line diagrams for the base game, the 6-reel bonus round and the 7-reel bonus round, as well as 60 and 100 pay line diagrams for all the various configurations of a bonus round too.
The numbers seem to be big in every area with Maximus Reels. There are six low-paying royal symbols, ranging from Nine through to Ace, four high-paying knight symbols, and the top-of-the-line wild symbol. The pay table shows the payouts for everything from three-of-a-kind up to seven-of-a-kind, which is only possible during the bonus round.
Like all games published by Red Tiger, the numbers given on the pay table have to be multiplied by the amount you are betting on each payline to give the number in cash that you will win by hitting that combination. For example, the highest paying 7x wild symbol combination shows as 500 on the pay table, which actually means 500x your bet per line – 0.05 units when betting 1.00 per spin, for a total win of 25.00.
It would be nice if they could make the pay table easier to understand for newcomers to online slots, as Play’N’Go does by updating the figures shown based on the size of your current stake.
Maximus Reels Special Features
There are quite a few features to discuss in Maximus Reels as well. Every time you spin the reels, there is a chance that up to five wild symbols will be added to the play field at random. It’s entirely possible for five wilds to just drop onto a payline before the reels have even stopped spinning, which is a very nice touch!
Hitting three, four, or five scatter symbols awards seven, ten, or fifteen free spins respectively. When the bonus begins you are transported to the battle arena, where you are asked to choose from several plates to add additional features to your bonus round. Entering the bonus with four or five scatters gives you additional chances to pick from these plates.
If you pick correctly, you can end up with 6 Sticky Wilds, 2 Extra Reels, 2 Extra Rows, all royal symbols converted into wilds, 2 Mirror Reels, and a multiplier of 2x or 3x. That’s many extra features and huge potential for some big wins!
A gamble feature is offered which allows you to double any win, including the outcome of your bonus round. I always feel like this is a little bit dangerous myself – you can lose your entire winnings, as well as double them. I choose to stay away from features like this personally, but it’s nice to have the option for players who enjoy this kind of thing. A pie gamble that allows you to keep some of your winnings back is the perfect compromise in my view!
Maximus Reels: The Verdict
