Gaming Board of Tanzania
Tanzania's gambling regulator overseeing one of Africa's earliest regulated sports betting markets.
The Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) is the regulatory authority responsible for licensing and supervising all gambling activities in Tanzania. Established under the Gaming Act, it oversees one of Africa’s most developed sports betting markets.
Tanzania’s Gambling Market
Sports betting contributes approximately 3.5% of Tanzania’s GDP — one of the highest proportions in Africa. The GBT has licensed numerous operators and has been relatively progressive in permitting mobile and online betting.
Regulatory Approach
The GBT balances market growth with consumer protection, implementing responsible gambling measures and monitoring operator compliance. Its regulatory framework has served as a model for other East African markets developing their own gambling legislation.
