Quickspin has been one of the most consistent slot developers over the past few years. They release some of the best games of any developer, yet never seem to get the same sort of praise as companies such as NetEnt, Microgaming, and Big Time Gaming. This is a real shame, as Crown of Valor once again proves that these guys know more than a thing or two about designing a great-looking, great playing online slot.
Crown of Valor Overview
This game takes place on a 5×5 grid and uses the cluster pays payout mechanic rather than any kind of fixed pay lines or pay ways. The RTP is an extremely respectable 96.48% if you use the bonus buy feature only, which costs 80x your current stake, or 96.16% if you play the game normally.
The game looks fantastic and has clearly been designed with all kinds of devices in mind. The interface works well using a mouse, but it’s clear that the pay table and help sections were designed with a touch screen in mind. I gave the game a try using my smartphone and was impressed to see the game detected the new device immediately and added larger buttons to the user interface.
Symbols & Payouts
There are four low-paying symbols which are represented by the usual royal symbols from Jack through to Ace. You’ll need more than seven Jacks or Queens to win more than your stake, and the top payouts for these range from 5x your total bet to 7.5x for 12 or more Ace symbols in a cluster. Nothing too exciting here, but the higher paying symbols up the ante massively.
There are three animal heads and a golden crown used for the higher paying symbols. Any grouping of these will pay out more than your stake, with 12 or more awarding you between 15x and 250x. Hitting large groups of these high-paying symbols whilst a high multiplier is active is the key to the massive wins.
There are a couple of special symbols, too. Firstly, a burning wild, which substitutes for everything except the scatter symbols and is destroyed separately when winning combinations are being removed from the grid. This is important because it means that your multiplier will increase an additional time for any combination that includes a wild symbol.
The scatter symbol is labelled “BNS”, and unlike many grid slots, you only need to land three of these anywhere on the grid to receive the free spins feature. If you do manage to hit four or five scatters, you will receive additional free spins – 14 for four scatters, or 18 for five.
Special Features
Like most grid slots, winning symbol clusters will be removed from the grid as soon as the round has begun, which will cause a cascade of new symbols. Each time symbols are removed from the grid your multiplier will increase by 1x. As mentioned previously, clusters that are formed including a wild symbol will result in an additional 1x multiplier increase for every wild symbol that is removed from the play field.
Additionally, each time a wild is removed from the play field the meter to the right of the main play area will fill up by one point as well. When the meter is full, 4 additional wild symbols will be added to the grid in random positions. This can make all the difference between a dead spin and a huge win, but it’s a shame that you have no control over when the feature triggers!
The wild meter is not active during the bonus round, but the ascending multiplier which normally resets after each spin is completed persists throughout your entire free spins session. Whenever a scatter symbol appears on the grid during the bonus round, one extra free spin will be added to your remaining total as well. It is possible to get your multiplier really high during the free spins feature, which makes it very tempting to use the “Bonus Buy” feature to skip waiting for the scatters to appear during the base game.
Crown of Valor: The Verdict
Play’n GO is usually regarded as being the best developer for grid slots, but it looks like they now have some serious competition on their hands from Quickspin. Crown of Valor is one of the best games released this year so far, and I can’t wait to spend some time playing it for real money now that it has officially launched.
