In Norse mythology, Jörmungandr, also known as Midgard (World) Serpent was the child of Loki and a giantess. Odin would throw Jörmungandr into the ocean surrounding Midgard where it would grow to such an extent that it could wrap around the earth. It was said that releasing its tail would bring about Ragnarök (end of days) – bringing death to both the gods and man!
