Cobra Queen is a classic ten-line slot with locking wilds, in the ever-popular Egyptian mythology style.
Max Win Gaming is a new provider that uses Red Tiger’s RTG Core software to create their online slots. The RTG Core platform makes it easy for developers who already have experience writing software to get their games licensed and distributed to some of the biggest online casinos in the world. Dozens of other software houses have also taken the opportunity to use the RTG Core as a quick route to market for their games. The result has been a flood of new and innovative slots, which has been great for those who like to play online.
Cobra Queen Overview
The first thing I noticed whilst playing Cobra Queen was the extremely high number of dead spins, which isn’t the greatest first impression! This is a result of the low number of pay lines – there are just ten, with a similar layout to NetEnt’s Dead or Alive. On the other hand, when you do score a win even the lowest paying combination of three symbols awards enough to cover the cost of several spins.
Cobra Queen uses a standard five-by-three layout and is advertised as being an extremely high volatility slot game. I see no reason to argue with that, but Red Tiger’s claim of a four-out-of-five hit rate feels a little disingenuous considering my earlier first impressions. Max Win Gaming advertises a maximum win of 2,000x, though I believe this is actually the maximum win from a single spin – a huge bonus round could feature several of these hits.
Symbols & Payouts
When looking at the pay table, the amounts shown must be multiplied by your bet per line. For example, if you choose the minimum bet of 0.20 units then you are betting 0.02 on each of the game’s ten pay lines. A line of three Aces shows a win of 10x, which is multiplied by your bet per line (0.02) to calculate how much you will win – in this case, 0.20 units.
That’s not very exciting – it’s the same amount you are betting! A full line of five cobra queen symbols returns 1,000x your bet on that line, which is 20.00 units – that’s much more like it, but the truth is you won’t see this combination very often. A lot of the game’s 96.02% RTP is tied up in these big five-of-a-kind wins, which are very hard to hit during the base game.
As a result, Cobra Queen ends up being all about hitting the bonus rounds, as that is where the money is! Let’s talk about those now.
The first time you hit a winning combination on Cobra Queen you will immediately notice that a wild symbol is left on the layout for the next spin. This feature triggers for every single win, so if you score a hit on several lines at once, the game will reward you with a wild symbol in the last position of every winning combination. The wilds have an additional win attached to them too, which increases if you manage to score another win which includes the wild symbol on the next spin.
It’s quite hard to do, but when you do see many wilds covering the play field and each new spin is winning big money and adding lots of extra wilds to the reels at the same time, it can be very exciting.
The best part is, during the free spins feature, these wild symbols will remain in place for the duration of the bonus round, rather than disappearing after one spin as they do during the base game. If you have a great bonus round and cover the screen with wilds, the symbols will continue to hit each other on every spin, increasing their value at the same time.
If you can manage to score a full line of wild symbols early during the bonus round, then get a retrigger or two afterward, you will definitely see an example of this game’s 2,000x stake jackpot! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to recreate this setup myself despite many, many attempts. It seems particularly difficult to hit any winning lines during the free spins, which is probably because a different reel set is used during the bonus round.
Cobra Queen: The Verdict
It seems inevitable to me that somebody will hit an absolute monster of a win on the Cobra Queen slot game sometime in the future. The potential is definitely there, even if I wasn’t able to see any of it directly during my testing.
Cobra Queen should be popular with those who enjoy simple, classic-style slots. I enjoyed testing this game immensely, and definitely intend to try this slot in real money mode soon.
